2037 in Review: Beirut

Post by Rubaboo » Thu Feb 21, 2019 11:09 am

2037 saw the UMEBA brought into the BBA fold, making the league a global power for the first time since the EBA folded. Teams were run by a combo of BBA GMs current and former, as well as outsiders looking for a shot. This makeup was similar to that of the players, many of whom are BBA has beens or never were's. The league would see 8 teams play out 79 games for the right to be one of 4 to make the playoffs. Beirut was among the best teams in the league for much of the season until a late season swoon saw the Knights drop to second in their division. The men from Lebanon would dig in, however, surging to make the first postseason dance as a wild card, edging Jerusalem by a single game.

In the playoffs, Beirut would dispatch Bucharest 4 games to 2, with former EBA and BBA OF Frazer Western winning series MVP. The storybook would end on a sour note though, as Beirut would eventually fall to Manama in 6 games in the Championship series. All in all, a successful season for Berut in the inaugural UMEBA campaign.

Starting Pitcher of the Year

R.J. Hughes
13 GS, 5-4, 2.29 ERA, 94.1 IP, 78K, 2.3 WAR

Hughes, a 3rd round pick of the Hawaii Tropics in 2028, was a horse as Beirut's #1, leading the Bancroft League in both K's and K/9 amongst qualified starters. He ranked among the top 6 in most major pitching statistical categories and has agreed to re-up on an extension worth $135k for 2038.

Relief Pitcher of the Year

Nawaf Bin Ammar
34 G, 5-2, 3.51 ERA, 56.1 IP, 55K, 0.7 WAR

Bin Ammar was the best amongst a poor stable in Beirut's 'pen. He was the only bullpen regular with a WAR number above 0.3. He has apparently decided his massive success in 2037 is worthy of a big payday on the open market as he refuses to re-up with the Green Knights. Sources indicate that the team is not fretting over his imminent departure.

Batter of the Year
Image
Carlos Soto
62 G, 58 GS, .339/.388/.554, 11 HR, 35 RBI, 2.7 WAR

Soto, a 12th round pick of the Hawaii Tropics in 2028, simply hit the cover off the ball in 2037, leading the Bancroft league in slugging % while hitting for high average. He was a bit of a liability at the hot corner, which the team feels was offset by his contribution at the plate and then some. He's on a minimum deal in 2037 and will auto renew for 2038 so the team will be expecting big things out of "Scrappy" going forward.
