Ammy Draft Wrap-Up
June 16, 2037

Drafted SP Tetsuzan Yamanaka (7/7/9 Talents) in the 2037 first-year player draft (Round 1, Pick 24, 24th overall pick).
Discussed in prior article.
OFP: Top of Rotation Starter
Likely: Mid Rotation Starter
ETA: 2041

Drafted RP Marvin Atkinson (10/7/8 Talents) in the 2037 first-year player draft (Round 2, Pick 24, 67th overall pick).
Discussed in prior article.
OFP: Lockdown Closer
Likely: High Leverage Reliever
ETA: 2041

Drafted 1B Phil Logan (7/9/6/4/7 Talents) in the 2037 first-year player draft (Round 3, Pick 23, 109th overall pick).
The skinny (6'1", 160 lbs) Logan is a 18 year old HSAS player from US Steel who has the Hustlers excited to have him in their system. In a draft where the Hustlers went all-out on pitching, Logan is an infielder who has primarily played first base but one the Hustlers see as capable of all infield positions and ultimately could end up at third base. He projects to be an elite gap hitter with above average contact and ability to avoid strikeouts. He was a four year starter for US Steel who this year bounced back from a disappointing junior campaign to cement himself as a top prospect.
OFP: Above-Average Regular
Likely: Second Division Regular
ETA: 2040

Drafted SP Raul Garcia (9/6/10 Talents) in the 2037 first-year player draft (Round 4, Pick 21, 141st overall pick).
Garcia has huge talent but coming into the draft it looked nearly certain that he would be going to college rather than sign a pro contract. It took a $7 million bonus to get him to sign with Las Vegas here, but could end up being worth it. First things first, Garcia is a reliever- he won't be a starter. Though he has plenty of endurance to start as he has with Havana in the IFA for two years (16 GS, 4-3, 3.86 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 14 BB, 101 K's) his changeup doesn't look to have the potential to develop to match his outstanding knuckle curve and above average fastball. He's a groundballer who throws in the low 90's and the hope is his velocity could still improve as his 6'4" frame fills in. This highly intelligent right-hander is a true boom or bust pick and a potentially game changing reliever in the fourth round.
OFP: All-Star Closer
Likely: High Leverage Reliever
ETA: 2041

Drafted LF Martin Vargro (6/8/5/6/6) in the 2037 first-year player draft (Round 5, Pick 21, 171st overall pick).
We let our Assistant GM make this pick (*autopick*) and we're not terribly disappointed. The lefty swinging high schooler (McDonalds, HSAS) had a bit of a down senior season but there's potential. His potential for gap power (sensing a trend here?) is a plus, and his contact and plate discipline look just good enough to be projectable to a future big leaguer. He's exceptionally speedy, leading to good range in the outfield and a decent arm, but his glove is not that reliable. Intangibles are a concern, as scouts have described him as having "mental lapses and a general lack of hustle."
OFP: Platoon Left-Fielder
Likely: Bench Outfielder
ETA: 2041

Drafted SP Pedro Blanco (6/4/10 Talents) in the 2037 first-year player draft (Round 6, Pick 21, 201st overall pick).
This Buenos Aires, Argentina native was a value pick in the sixth round. Projects to be a true starter down the road, with pinpoint control, decent stuff and three pitches (fastball, curveball, changeup) with the change being his future "out-pitch". Movement will be the challenge for the lefty, as was shown this year with Warsaw (IFA) where he regressed to allow 17 homers in 43 innings.
OFP: Back-Rotation Starter
Likely: Bullpen/AAA
ETA: 2041

Drafted 1B Julian Rios (7/7/7/6/6 Talents) in the 2037 first-year player draft (Round 7, Pick 21, 231st overall pick).
The Hustlers have never been afraid of selecting bat-only prospects, especially when they're lefty bats. That's the case with Rios here, who has a lefty bat profile that Vegas couldn't continue to ignore at this point in the draft (he'd been considered for the previous pick as well). Huge red flag as after having a huge season for Bangkok in 2036 his playing time faded as did his production in 2037. Many felt this was a direct result of his range in left field fading to nothing and not having a true position to play. Like Garcia, Rios was considered by many to be "impossible" to sign but couldn't turn down a $7,000,000 bonus from the Hustlers (hey, we have to spend the money somewhere). A huge body at 6'7", 215 lbs., he could continue to grow into his height and more power could follow.
OFP: First Division DH
Likely: Bench Bat
ETA: 2040

Drafted LF Peter Doggett (5/8/7/6/4 Talents) in the 2037 first-year player draft (Round 8, Pick 21, 261st overall pick).
Another pick by the Assistant GM, Doggett fits the mold of players the Hustlers are targeting with heavy gap power potential, decent contact and home run power, and a good enough eye (though a penchant to strike out). At this point it seems as if every player the Hustlers have drafted had a down senior season and Doggett is the most extreme of the bunch, going from a 127 OPS+ in 2036 to a 36 OPS+ in 2037. Ick. Decent enough defense to play left field but far from ideal. He's pretty much what you'd expect from an eight round pick, a real lottery ticket.
OFP: Bench Contributor
Likely: Minor League Depth
ETA: 2042

Drafted CL Dwight Johnston (9/6/5 Talents) in the 2037 first-year player draft (Round 9, Pick 21, 291st overall pick).
After pitching five years in HSAS for Mobil, Johnston was the 5th round pick of the Montreal Blazers last year but failed to sign. He joined Kodak of the CCAS and worked as their closer this year, a role that he transitioned to his senior year of high school after starting exclusively from 2032-2035. With 16 saves and a 1.91 ERA the results were outstanding from a college freshman. His stamina is elite, he has a nice fastball up to 92 mph, a good slider and then a changeup that is not worth mentioning. Johnston, a 19 year old right-hander, is highly regarded for his exceptional work ethic.
OFP: High Leverage Reliever
Likely: Major League Reliever
ETA: 2039

Drafted SP Tommy Bush (8/4/5 Talents) in the 2037 first-year player draft (Round 10, Pick 21, 321st overall pick).
After targeting younger prospects exclusively to this point, Bush is a different type of prospect. The 20 year old righty has three years of collegiate experience, though only one year (2037) of starting (11 GS, 2-4, 4.77 ERA, 1.34 WHIP). The Hustlers like the fact that his movement potential, while still too low to be a real prospect, has been steadily increasing (from 2 to 4) over the years. He has four pitches to work with- a 97 mph fastball, a well developed sinker, a still developing splitter, and a not-so-useful changeup. Bush fits all of the checkboxes that the Hustlers look for in late round pitchers- multiple pitches, room to grow, and someone who might be a relief conversion candidate if he doesn't ultimately develop into a starter.
OFP: Back-Rotation Starter
Likely: Bullpen/Depth
ETA: 2039

Drafted SP Aurelio Soto (7/6/6 Talents) in the 2037 first-year player draft (Round 11, Pick 21, 351st overall pick).
A 17 year left-hander out of Argentina, Soto looks like a reliever but when the changeup is a two and not a one, you never know. Results this year were HOT GARBAGE for Seoul (IFA) but the Hustlers have chosen to overlook the fact that he had a 12.60 ERA in 8 starts.
OFP: Major League Reliever
Likely: LOOGY/Depth
ETA: 2040

Drafted SP Manuel Mota (6/3/5 Talents) in the 2037 first-year player draft (Round 12, Pick 21, 381st overall pick).
A big (6'5") Panamanian lefty, Mota is a four year collegian (General Mills) who pitched aa a reliever the first two years and a starter the latter two. He's an injury risk, currently out with a partially torn UCL (elbow) that he suffered May 22nd. This isn't the only injury, as he was out with a strained back earlier this year and missed several months last year with shoulder inflammation. Has good stamina but low movement. His makeup is highly in question, as scouts say he "doesn't have the drive to make the most out of his tools." Why do the Hustlers like him? He's a lefty knuckleballer, baby!!!
OFP: Innings Eater
Likely: Bullpen/Depth
ETA: 2040

Drafted C David Morales (5/7/5/6/5 Talents) in the 2037 first-year player draft (Round 13, Pick 21, 411st overall pick).
Vegas always takes at least one catcher every year and this year it's Morales, who is a bit of a mystery. He only played one season for Manchester (IFA) and didn't play much at that. Not a defensive star but not a liability. He checks off the gap power and eye boxes. We'll see.
OFP: Backup Catcher
Likely: Minor League Depth
ETA: 2041

Drafted SP Jose Mejia (9/3/4 Talents) in the 2037 first-year player draft (Round 14, Pick 21, 441st overall pick).
"Shrimp", as his teammates call him, has lots of experience at the college level as a 22 year old, most of it promising. Huge stuff potential, and three exceptionally promising pitches mixed with 10 stamina and 98 mph velocity make him appealing. Movement and control are the big issues. Boom/bust candidate who could easily wash out of the system quickly- if the Hustlers manage to sign him which is still highly in question right now.
OFP: Back-Rotation Starter
Likely: Power Reliever
ETA: 2039

Drafted SP Richard Shaw (8/4/7 Talents) in the 2037 first-year player draft (Round 15, Pick 21, 471st overall pick).
What the hell happened in HSAS in 2037 that everyone regressed? Shaw is no different (8 GS, 7.71 ERA). He started 40 games over five seasons with Pepsi, but he's slated to be a relief prospect for the Hustlers. He has several things going for him, primarily the fact that he's a lefty with a reverse split; additionally he looks to have an outstanding curveball as an out pitch with a decent fastball. Changeup- bleh, thus the move to the bullpen.
OFP: Multi-Inning Reliever
Likely: Bullpen/Depth
ETA: 2040

Drafted RP Safe-eldin Kamil (7/5/4 Talents) in the 2037 first-year player draft (Round 16, Pick 21, 501st overall pick).
Kamil is a really nice value pick this deep in the draft. The Kenyan lefty is a true short relief guy who is already pretty highly developed after three years in high school and a full four years in college, where he shined.
OFP: High Leverage Reliever
Likely: LOOGY
ETA: 2039

Drafted RP Antonio Martinez (6/5/6 Talents) in the 2037 first-year player draft (Round 17, Pick 21, 531st overall pick).
Another lefty reliever? You bet. Martinez doesn't have the upside of the other guys but looks to have a higher floor.
OFP: Relief/Depth
Likely: Minor Leaguer
ETA: 2041

Drafted RP Jesus Alarcom (9/4/5 Talents) in the 2037 first-year player draft (Round 18, Pick 21, 561st overall pick).
A four year HSAS lefty for POS Portal, he moved to the bullpen his senior year and saved seven games. Like most of the other guys the Hustlers picked, he has good (stuff, control, pitch potential) and bad (movement) traits and could go either way. Only time will tell.
OFP: High Leverage Reliever
Likely: Relief/Depth
ETA: 2041

Drafted RP Luis Aviles (8/3/5 Talents) in the 2037 first-year player draft (Round 19, Pick 21, 591st overall pick).
Interestingly this 23 year old lefty spent a total of seven years with Kellogg (COL) and over that time appeared in 88 games, all as a reliever, saving 11 games with a 3.76 ERA. The Hustlers are just continuing to stockpile lefty arms that most likely won't be anything but there's power in numbers.
OFP: LOOGY
Likely: Minor Leaguer
ETA: 2040

Drafted CL Kensaku Kokawa (8/4/6 Talents) in the 2037 first-year player draft (Round 20, Pick 21, 621st overall pick).
Not sure when I've ever been quite as excited about a 20th round pick before, but in this case there's significant enough chance of Kokawa becoming a major league reliever that I'm justifying it to myself. Three great pitches, a lefty, well-developed, outstanding results at both the high school and college level. Health history looks good. Short (6'0") Japanese native who just may have a shot. Just wish he could get the ball on the ground instead of in the air.
OFP: High Leverage Reliever
Likely: Relief/Depth
ETA: 2039

There were a couple of mis-tagged 1B in the pool that I was curious where they'd go. BRK's Bowen, my Martinez and your Logan are the three I can recall off the top of my head. Good pick.

Yeah. I end up looking at every !B because it seems like half of them these days are corner OF's or 2nd/3rd basemen. Like clicking on every three pitch starter to make sure they actually have three real pitches, this is not an OOTP highlight for me.

Nice draft though, Recte. I had a bunch of the same guys.

Lots of teams came away with big talent pools, but It's always hard to out- talent Vegas.

My minor league system has been garbage recently for the most part, according to BNN at least.
