37-2 Checking the Locks: Catcher

Post by crobillard » Sun Dec 02, 2018 4:51 pm

This is a series where I will evaluate the options in each position leading into Spring Training. This is the first of twelve parts, including a prediction and end of Spring Training analysis. I will be taking a looking into the catcher position in this post.

Sure fire locks: Eric Fabre
Trying to get in the door: Larry Ledezma, Miguel Valencia

Fabre has been the Jackrabbits' starter for two seasons. In a league full of powerful catchers, his 8 power translated into 22 homeruns in 474 at bats last season. A .226 batting average and a .700 OPS is probably not good enough to quell competition. However, for now, he's our best option at catcher and his arm is good enough to catch a few aggressive runners.

Valencia was the main backup at catcher last season. He had similar stats to Fabre in very limited at bats. With his 4 catcher rating, he's a major defensive liability. The 24 year old Ledezma is Valencia's challenger since it's extremely likely the team only takes one backup catcher. He's not much better defensively with a 5 rating, his 6/7/6/5/7 ratings provides the team with a better balanced option at the plate.

Fabre is a nice player. May of just been a sophomore slump. He's a solid C option for sure.

I like this idea for a series a lot! I may have to steal it if/when I get a team!

Go for it! It's my favorite series to do and it helps me get my thoughts in order around the team. Identify weaknesses and such. These posts are mostly me just rambling.
