Sticking Points 2036.5: Rockville Wins Landis

Post by aaronweiner » Mon Nov 19, 2018 2:11 pm

If the Rockville Pikemen were still the Carolina Kraken, we'd probably have led in with some idea of some kind of long, dark night being over. If they were still the Hackensack Bulls we'd probably have a whole different writing staff. But, the fans of Rockville have to be spoiled by now. The Rockville Pikemen have never had a losing season; their first year, they went 82-80, then 99-63 with a Cartwright appearance, the year after, 103 wins with a JL pennant, and, finally, they've climbed the hill to the mountaintop, knocking off the San Fernando Bears in five games to win their first title in Rockville and the third for the franchise overall.

"We've been waiting and waiting for this day," said Arthur Dempster, who clinched the championship game with eight innings of shutout 3-hit baseball. "This is what we all play for. This is why we play."

The favored Pikemen were absurdly dominant in the five game set, even moreso than expected. Rockville won the five game series by a combined total of 41-12, an average score of 8-2 rounded down, losing just a one run Game 3. Only two members of the Pikemen who had more than six at-bats hit less than .300 for the series, and the Pikemen shut out the Bears over the last 21 innings of baseball.

"We came to play, and we took it all," sald starter Dan Cannon, who pitched a beautiful complete game shutout in Game 4 and had two complete game shutouts in the playoffs. "It's especially gratifying knowing that I beat Atlantic City to get here and that I've been so much more successful in Rockville,"

What's next for the Pikemen? Well, they're going to try to do something that's never been done in the modern era: win three straight pennants. Several teams have won three titles in five years and Vegas did three in four, but no team has ever been in the Landis three straight seasons in the modern era.

"We think we might have our best team next year yet," said Charles Puckett Golden Bat award winner and batting champion Mario Guerrer. "We can't wait to see how management keeps this team together."
