Dorks Being Dorks: Contract Options

Post by RonCo » Tue Nov 06, 2018 12:28 pm

Stephen Lane, Ted Schmidt, and I spend an afternoon talking about more contract neep, this time focused on the various types of options we use in the BBA. When (if ever) do you use Team Options, Player Options, and Opt-outs. Ted waxes eloquently on the value of Vesting Options, and we even touch on the idea of Compensation Draft Picks play into the mix.

There may or may not be a way you can get your owner to extend a player exceeding next seasons budget. Option or not. 🤐

plowing through this now and I have to say im very much #teamted on player options. I have never offered a player option and cant imagine a situation in which I would.

The issues with planning you get with player options are easy to see (and therefore push to avoid). On the whole I prefer not to give them. But the mitigating factors/upsides are often over-looked.

1) The player might take less to sign if you give an opt-out/option (unproven, but seems logical)
2) If a player executes his opt-out, you get a compensation pick

For example, if McNeill signed his $9M deal in part because of the opt-out, it was worth it. Also, if McNeill, LaLoosh, and Garcia all opt-out (certainly possible), then I'm in line for as many as two first-round and one second round supplemental picks if I can't hire them back. I'd prefer to keep them, but that doesn't suck as a going away present.

For the record I would not be opposed to giving an opt-out in the right situation, unlike a player option.

That's on top of two more first rounders that I'm likely to be in line for if De Castillo and Souza leave.

So there's an outcome that has Yellow Springs receiving our own 1st, four supplemental 1sts, our 2nd, and a supplemental 2nd in the draft as our veterans roll off into FA.

Operationally, an opt-out is just a player option in the middle of the deal. But, yes, I'm more excited about opt-outs than player options, especially for five and six year deals.

I love vesting options, they are the single best thing ever.
