2036.27 - The Long Beach Independent - Depth, Depth and More Depth

SURFERS ON FIVE GAME WIN STREAK

September 10, 2036
Long Beach, CA

The up and down season has reached it's final month, and luckily for the fans, it looks like an "up" month for the Surfers. Riding high after a sweep of the California Crusaders, they won the first game of their series against the Valencia Stars to take their win streak to five games. Just a week and a half into September they've already won half as many games as they did the entire month of August.

With the expansion of rosters on the first of the month, Long Beach has been able to take advantage of the depth of the 40 man roster as assembled by GM Stephen "Smoke and Mirrors" Lane. The roster has no fewer than 10 pitchers who can start on any given night, and with about a 50/50 split of lefties and righties, this enables manager Anthony Light to play matchups to his heart's content.

Two righties and Crusader/Slugger killer Pepe Castillo (6/6/8 Ratings) were able to hold California to just 5 runs in the three game sweep. Lefties Pierre Legrand (8/7/7 Ratings) and Manny Gabriel (10/5/7 Ratings) will start the remaining games against the Stars, while righties Irving Espinoza (6/6/8 Ratings), Julio Velasco (9/6/10 Ratings), Diogo Lindt (8/6/7 Ratings), and Kevin Graham (6/8/7 Ratings) are penciled in to start against the right handed lineup from Boise.

The opportunity to start just right handed pitching against Boise will allow the lefties to rest up for two big series against Omaha and San Fernando next week.

Another advantage of the expanded rosters is the addition of more relievers. The first two games of last week's series against the Mounties saw starters Allain Jolivet (8/5/6 Ratings) and Pierre Legrand (8/7/7 Ratings) go 1.0 and 0.2 innings in their respective starts. The bullpen was able to limit the damage despite the extensive workload and help the Surfers split the two games. The star of the bullpen this past week has been rookie Luis Oliva (8/5/8 Ratings) who pitched 1.2 scoreless innings against the Crusaders in his debut game, and 3 scoreless innings against the same the next day. It's not out of the question that he starts a game or two down the stretch, and the 23 year old lefty looks to have a future of some sort in Long Beach.

There's been less movement on the offensive side, but old friend Antonio Valentin (8/7/2/3/10 Ratings) has returned for pinch hitting/DH duties, and journeyman Jesus Delgado (5/6/1/5/5 Ratings) has been brought up for some defensive support.

Barring a complete collapse, the Surfers are in good position for the final Wild Card spot, with the number crunchers at StatsPlus giving them over a 90% chance to reach the playoffs.
