9-News: 36.043 – LaLoosh, Chavez, Valle Crack Crusaders

Momentum Building?

With the defending Landis champion and Pacific leading California Crusaders on the schedule for four tough games, the YS9 pitching staff showed they might just be rounding into the shape that fans have expected all season.

Lawrence Columbus LaLoosh got things going by striking out 7 California hitters in 6.1 innings, allowing only 4 hits and a single run to gather his 7th win of the season. The offense helped him out in the form of a 3-run homer from catcher Aaron Stone in the first, and the defense chipped in when Stone threw out Owen Stark to end the second inning and shortstop Joaquin Torres started a nifty double play to end the sixth.

“Crash was never gone,” said manager Bret Richards when asked about LaLoosh’s resurgence. “We’ve talked about this over and over, but you guys keep writing whatever you want. He had what might have been his worst outing across his entire career to start the season. But take that out, and his numbers are as good as they’ve ever been. Have any of you ever had a day at the typewriter where nothing happened? I mean, just get real all right?”

The next question was “what is a type writer?”

Nonetheless, the man has a point. Remove his horrendous 9-run start against Long Beach and you’re left with 7-2. 2.98.His FIP-, even with that first start, is a solid 81 and dropping.

Game two saw Jose Chavez struggle starting on only 4-days rest, but still strike out 5 Crusaders in three and two-thirds.

“We made him throw a few too many pitches,” said first baseman Lucas McNeill, who committed an error to extend the third inning. The first saw sure-handed Angel De Castillo botch another play that cost the left-hander pitches, too. Chavez disagreed that his defense let him down. “That’s on me,” he said. “I’ve got to be a little more efficient.”

In the meantime, however, the bullpen (Tim Oliver and Emilo Gutierrez) shut the Crusaders down and the offense, led by lead-off hitter Carlos Garcia getting on base four times, stealing a base, and scoring twice—and by Dimaio Laqui’s two-run double, scored five runs to beat the home team for the second time in a row.

Then 23-year-old Carlos Valle took the mound.

Yes, Lucas McNeill had a fabulous game, stroking what turned out to be the winning home run as the third batter in the first inning—a two-run shot to right field—and then hitting another later. But Valle was the real story as far as Nine fans go. The kid threw 8 innings, walking only one and allowing only two hits. Of his 96 pitches, 65 were strikes.

“When you get a guy throwing like that, things get easier,” said Richards.

The Crusaders would come back to take the fourth game of the series, but facts are facts, and the point here is that with each game you could feel the tension unwinding from this team. It’s been a tough season so far, a season spent mostly on the road, and a season in which the Omaha Hawks have run off and nearly disappeared. But you can feel the sites being lowered today. The Nine are getting their act together, and they’ll play 53 of their remaining 84 games at home.

“It’s going to be interesting,” said center fielder Mauro Saucedo. “That’s for sure.”
