Trail Droppings 2036-3 Worst Calgary Offense Ever!!!
Worst Calgary Offense Ever
Last season the Calgary Pioneers had the 2nd best offensive production in team history, scoring 901 runs. The team set club records for most hits, home runs, SLG and OPS. The team averaged 5.5 runs per game. The team’s bats took it to the final four. Now the team is averaging 3.5 runs per game and shattering team records for futility. What happened?
How bad is this year’s offense? The 3.5 runs per game is almost a full run below the next worst season in team history. The team hit .286 last season and now is batting ,232, 19 points below the next worst season. The team is averaging less than a homer per game, .8, again the worst in team history. OBA? .276, worst by 22 points. SLG? .373, yep 26 points below the next worst season, and more than a hundred points lower than last year’s .495. OPS? .649, next worst was .709 and last year the team posted am .830 OPS.
Manager Terry Cochran doesn’t have the answers. “I have essentially the same lineup, except we added Susumu, so the team should be putting up similar numbers. I have never seen an entire team go on a slump like this.”
Only two players in the starting lineup are hitting over .250. Rookie third baseman Susumu Nakanishi is hitting .252 and leading the team with 8 home runs. He is the only change in the lineup from last year. First baseman Francisco Marin is ripping the cover off the ball with a team leading batting average of .280. Yep the leaders are not Soriano, Grant, Karyabwite, Franco, etc. The leaders are a rookie and a second year player.
“I have no idea what is wrong. Spring Training went fine, but as soon as the season started it’s like we forgot how to hit,” said hitting coach Don Goodwin. “I’d quit if I thought someone else could turn it around. Did someone curse us and I missed it?”
Two of the most important run producers in the lineup are hitting under .200. Mario Soriano is hitting .176. Yep the future HOFer (maybe not now) who hit .330 last year and .357 the year before is hitting .176. He is hitting HALF of what his 2034 average was. HALF!! Soriano was on track to get his 3000 hit this season, now he is hoping to out hit Mendoza.
Rupert Grant, one of the great sluggers of recent years, the man that set the club record with 62 homers last year has 3. He is on track to hit 15 this year. The bat boy could hit 15 in Calgary’s park. He is also batting .182 with a .339 SLG. Last year his SLG was .582. The cleanup hitter is batting .182 and the leadoff guy is hitting .176. Gee, I wonder why the team isn’t scoring runs?
Juan Karyabwite lost the batting title last season in the last sim. He still managed to hit .353 after hitting .315 the previous two years and leading the league in 2032 with a .338 average. This year he is batting .244 and that is only after he hit .350 in the first sim of May. He rounds out the top 3 players that Calgary looks to for run production, he’s the leader of the pack. The team is paying a combined $30 million for this flaming pile of dog crap.
Tony Franco has always been a team player. The guy that has more Zimmers at third base than any other player in BBA history gave up his chance at another. He moved to short for the good of the team so that the rookie could play third and his bat would be an upgrade at short. Well he is hitting .210 with 1 homer and 3 RBIs. Only once in the past 14 years has Franco not hit at least 20 homers. He has hit more than 30 five times including the past three and he has 1.
The slump even has bench coach Allen Lemasters fired up. This guy never makes comments, he just does his job. Lemasters has threatened to make the team take batting practice with a tee if things don’t improve. “They want to play like a bunch of 5 year olds then lets do it right?,” he said.
Addendum: This article was written before the team’s most recent sim. Yeah the team went 4-2. Soriano got hurt and is out for a couple of months and the team also lost starting catcher Antonio Robles. Thank the baseball Gods for Vancouver and Edmonton

That's a really rough start.
Side note:
Soriano has always been a favorite of mine, I really wanted to sign him as a FA as I was coming out of my rebuild. I often wonder what the path of my franchise would have looked like if I got him instead of Estes.

I remember letting test free agency once, maybe twice because his extension demands were ridiculous. He has been a great player and only gotten better with age, but I wonder if this injury will be the beginning of the end. You will probably get a shot at him again this year as I don't see how I sign both him and Hernandez to extensions.

It'll depend on how well his defense holds up this year. I can't make the mistake of signing a "CF" to a big contract again **coughKenJenkinscoughcough*

Hopefully not, but Soriano was willing to agree to a decent extension.
