2036-14: Talons Season Preview: Starting Rotation

Post by jiminyhopkins » Wed Sep 12, 2018 5:41 pm

Injuries have taken their toll already! Is a trade in the works?

1. Jose Trujillo (10/8/6 Talents)
The ace of the staff for good reason. Trujillo was tied for the league lead in wins last year with 19, despite having a down year with respect to strikeout rate. He still has great stuff with three outstanding pitches. We'd love to talk about how durable he has been the past three seasons, averaging over 200 IP per year, but we know that would only serve to get him catastrophically injured within weeks.

2. Bob Corrigan (10/7/7 Talents)
No one ever thought he'd be a good number two, but here we are. Last two seasons he has averaged 3.3 WAR, and he led the team in ERA in 2035. Corrigan has two elite pitches, to go along with a below average slider and a useless changeup, so it's all about pitch selection for the young righty. Still only earning 750K this season after signing a very team friendly extension that bought out his arb years.

3. Juan Martinez (7/8/6 Talents)
George House was supposed to slot here, after going 10-7 with a 4.39 ERA a year ago. But he got hurt for the season, which opens a big hole in the Talons' already thin rotation. The veteran Martinez, who has seen some success for various teams in recent years, was supposed to be the long reliever/spot starter. Maybe we should trade one of our hitters for a pitcher, hmm?

4. Martin Pacheco (6/7/7 Talents)
The veteran Pacheco will also be counted on to provide innings with the injury to House. Although he did pitch very well (3.08 ERA) starting 10 games down the stretch last season, he was never meant to spend the whole season in the rotation. If Pacheco, or any of the 3-5 starters don't work out, a trade will be urgently needed.

5 Cesar Aguilar (8/6/7 Talents)
Yep, he's finally peaked and ready to prove he was worthy of being part of the return in the Winson trade. He should have what it takes to hold down the #5 starter spot, with three of four pitches being at least decent, and about average stuff and control. His inexperience will surely work against him, and his mental toughness has been questioned at times.

Wow, that's really a Spahn and Sain and pray for rain type rotation. Some creative off day planning letting you get 37 to 38 starts out of those top two could go a long way.

Hope Aguilar pans out. Not sure what happened to him after he was bumping big time before the trade. Still could be a solid arm.
