San Fernando's Next Experiment?
There has been plenty of discussions regarding the Sugar Kings/Bears experiment with a 6-man rotation, for and against. Good or bad, they won last season's Landis. Who is willing to give this a shot though......

Re: San Fernando's Next Experiment?
How would one accomplish this in OOTP? Have no rotation listed and select "always start highest rested"?

Re: San Fernando's Next Experiment?
I'm pretty sure the code treats the 'long relief' distinction as innings 1-5 (hence why you can set your mid-relief/setup men to be 8th, 7th or 6th inning). So I imagine you would do an empty rotation and then have the guys you want to pitch early in games as your long relievers - and trust the notoriously terrible OOTP AI to not throw out tired guys constantly.jiminyhopkins wrote: ↑Thu Aug 02, 2018 10:23 amHow would one accomplish this in OOTP? Of course, I don't think this strategy really could work in OOTP because I don't think pitcher exhaustion is modeled in a way to allow it.

Re: San Fernando's Next Experiment?
7-day lineups and pitch counts. I've often thought of this, and have done it once or twice this year to enact bullpen games. You could extend it. The issue is that the game will always treat your starter like a starter rather than a reliever.

Re: San Fernando's Next Experiment?
Maybe setting your game or player strategy to have a really quick hook for them mor your "starters" as well?

Re: San Fernando's Next Experiment?
I had this conversation with a co-worker not too long ago...
How long away are we until we see a major league team sign 9 shut down relievers and just let them do the work all game?
I said there will be a GM come along and have an 11-12 man staff. Have 2 starters you designate as workhorses who have to give you 7 innings each start. If they get hammered its on them. They have to go 7. But in the other 3 starts per rotation it's all shut down guys.
Imagine If you went:
Game 1 - 9 shut down relievers
Game 2 - Random starter gives you 6-7 innings
Game 3 - 9 shut down relievers
Game 4 - Other random starter gives you 6-7 innings
Game 5 - 9 shut down relievers
Repeat
In games 2 and 4 you give the final 2 innings to whoever your 12th pitcher is to finish the game or if you have a guy that gives you 2-3 innings on a low pitch count in games 1, 3, or 5 it rests someone else up. If you're getting shelled, you turn it over to a position player and take your medicine.

Re: San Fernando's Next Experiment?
There's a lot of games you could play with varying levels of potential efficacy. I think it'll be awhile before it becomes terribly prevelant around the league, though. Look how long it took for defensive shifting to go from 'fringe' to 'slightly less fringe'. If my memory is serving me, the Rays started that almost a decade ago, right?

Technically I suppose the Indians started it in the 1940s when Ted Williams came to the plate.

Had I had awareness of it happening, 5 year old me would have burned him in effigy, I'm sure.

Re: San Fernando's Next Experiment?
Six man rotations are dumb in a video game. That's right, I said it. The game is coded to make sure you are at 100 percent stamina after 4 days rest. The only reason to use 6 guys is so that so many of your starters are rested that you can gimmick matchups. Outside of that, there's no point. Come at me, Randy!
