Hall of Fame Metrics Definitions

Post by RonCo » Fri Jun 29, 2018 5:14 pm

If you're like me, you can sometimes forget what flavor the various HoF Metrics and Tests represent. As a refresher/reminder, I'll sticky this.
This is essentially: Average(career WAR, 7-year peak WAR). Its goal is to arrive at a number that provides some reasonable weights to both a player's peak season and their longevity.

Black Ink:
A Bill James concept that provides players points for leading the league in various categories. Will give advantages to players who played in eras with fewer teams, but it's a snapshot for how often a player might have been the best in the league.

Gray Ink:
Much like the Black Ink test, but provides points for being in the top-1o leaderboard of various stats. Will also give some advantage to players from eras with fewer teams, but it's a snapshot for how often a player was among the best in the league.

HOF Standard:
This is a point-gathering test gives a score of 50 for an average Hall of Famer, with 100 as the max. It measure the overall quality of a player's career as opposed to peak value, and compares it to other Hall of Famers.
While none of these should be viewed as absolute go/no-go measuring sticks, when you apply them all you can get an interesting picture of the value of the player relative to the era and players they played in and against.

Importantly regarding black and grey ink, many of the players from the early years have zero here, as these were not recorded.
