Episode #11 - GM's Corner Podcast: 2034 Calgary

Post by RonCo » Sun May 06, 2018 6:56 pm

Image Kevin Dickson and I sit down for a fantastically fun conversation that ranges from his early days in the league (six realtime years) through the team's current cage match with the Surfers, and out into the Pioneer and BBA future.

Hear about Terry Cochrane and the role of the DH. Small ball vs. long ball. How Kevin thinks abou tbuilding teams and the role of his ballparks. Advice the the freshies, including me! The state of the league and much, much more.

This is one that shouldn't be missed...but then, aren't they all?

Great listen, just finished. I think one note about the sign and flip stuff you guys briefly covered is that a lot of us only are suggesting that to rebuilding teams, rather than people in a competitive run, which is probably why it's not part of your strategy, Ron.

Possibly. But I'll admit the idea of signing a guy just to flip him is counter to my aesthetics, too. Not that I won't do it. It's just not my first nature.

I was just suggesting that if there is decent veteran talent in the expansion draft, a team could draft a guy and trade him for some younger prospects. It will be interesting to see the approach that those two guys take, particularly since they are vets and know how to build a team. This one is going to be fun to watch.

I think this is going to come down to how much minor league talent is available. It seems like there will be a decent number of B-/C+ prospects available. In that case, I don't know if you're going to get much more for a flippable vet. Probably better to just take the prospect. There IS the fan interest benefit to taking the vet prior to trading though.

I agree that it's certainly possible Brett or Stu would take guys to flip. It's not a bad strategy. Just not one that I tend to personally take.

Thanks for asking. Well they both have journalism degrees, the older one with writing and the middle one with graphics and design. Elizabeth, my oldest, worked as a reporter for awhile and then worked at the Newseum (museum dedicated to journalism) in DC. She just moved in January to CAP (Center for American Progress) which is a liberal think tank. My middle daughter, Becky, interned for President Obama in 2014 and then worked for a lobbyist group and then the publication "The Hill". She moved last fall over to Emily's List where she works to get more women to run and get elected. So they are both doing great, paying their own bills (every parents hope) and contributing to society.

Footnote on my daughter Becky. She found out about her cancer in December 2016. Someone at the White House found out about it and about a month later she got a note from President Obama giving her support and encouragement. It was signed 2 days before he left office. I'm sure he had a lot of other things to deal with and he took time to write her a note. So regardless of your political views that was a class act from a good guy and meant a lot to her.

That is impressive (and paying your own bills in this town is no small feat). Sounds like you have every reason to be proud.
