2009 Hall of Fame Final Tally
Congratulations to Morris Pennebaker on his election to the MBWBA Hall of Fame in his first year on the ballot. With 3009 hits and 704 homers, Pennebaker was a shoo-in, making it difficult for other players to receive high ballot placement. Once again, Riley Hinson falls short, largely as a result of Pennebaker's dominance. He still managed to be placed first on two ballots, with pitchers Hayden Finch and Eddie Harris also finding themselves place first on ballots, but that was not enough. He only needed 1.26 points on each ballot. If the three people that voted him fourth had placed him third, and the voter who placed him fifth had voted him third, he would be in. However, he will once again have to wait until next year. Interestingly, in spite of Pennebaker's dominant numbers, one voter placed him eighth on their ballot. There is just no accounting for taste.
Unfortunately, we must say goodbye to Hank Daniels, a two-time POY who fell just 90 Ks short of 3000 strikeouts. Daniels was hurt by a relatively low win total and a seemingly pedestrian 3.65 ERA even though he was one of the most dominant pitchers of the late 80s and early 90s. David Smurf also exits the ballot as #13 on the home run list due in part to the lowest hit total on the ballot and a very normal 117 OPS+ as a first baseman. Perhaps more surprisingly is the loss of Gabriel Steel who also had a 117 OPS+ in a long career that saw him put up 2630 hits and 287 homers, while playing mostly at shortstop throughout his career.
Here is your final tally. 437 points required for election.

Re: 2009 Hall of Fame Final Tally
Is there a way to tweak the voting to give a little more value to players ranked #2 or #3 on a ballot? It seems that in years where there is a clear first year inductee it is impossible for a second guy to make it. Next year Jay Lee will be ranked #1 on most ballots creating a similiar situation.

Re: 2009 Hall of Fame Final Tally
It is actually very possible. In the multiple leagues we use this in, I've seen numerous cases where second and third guys get in. In fact, we had one year where four guys managed it somehow. However, when voting is as divided as it is on a guy like Hinson, it is hard to overcome it. He got too many votes in the middle of the pack. Remember that you only have to average a third place vote to get in. It is hard to have a third of the ballots put you sixth or lower and get in.indiansfan wrote:Is there a way to tweak the voting to give a little more value to players ranked #2 or #3 on a ballot? That's one of the nice things about the system as it is. The shoo-ins always get in, and some of the borderline guys. Very few people get in who don't deserve it, and very few people get in on the first ballot who aren't surefire guys.
Hinson will get in eventually, I'm pretty certain of that.
