2008 Hall of Fame Ballot
Some big, new names on the ballot this year and a number of big names which were left off of the ballot but will undoubtedly be making an appearance in future years. Lots of good players to choose from, and I only saw one new guy who was worth knocking off the bottom players from last year's ballot. Last year on the ballot for the amazing Rashardo Menne, Jr. who has always fallen short due perhaps to some counting stats which don't make him stand out against the competition. Still has the second highest OPS+ on the ballot while playing shortstop. That should say something, but it is still likely not enough to get him in. What will voters do with last year's close runner-up and Commish's favorite, Riley Hinson? Will Medric Wood's hit total and recognizable name be enough to get him noticed? Is Rob Van Winkle just too Vanilla to be noticed on this ballot?
Ballots due to me by the end of the Championship Series.

Re: 2008 Hall of Fame Ballot
Before voting, is there anything I should know about eras? Ie. was league wide pitching weaker when Rashardo put up his .878 OPS vs. when Van Winkle put up his .855 OPS (with nearly a decade between the ends of their careers)? Or has the league been pretty consistent through the years?

Are you serious!!?? That owner's right to vote in the HOF should be revoked.jcrmoon42 wrote:You would think so, but one voter put him 13th on their ballot.7teen wrote:Ted Sale should be a slam dunk.
How do you vote the guy who is 1st in games, 1st in runs scored, 4th in hits, 5th in homeruns, 2nd in RBI, and 2nd in career total bases 13th on your ballot?

I haven't gone over this enough to comment on what my list is going to look like (and I don't even agree with the below statement), but, to play Devil's advocate...7teen wrote:Are you serious!!?? A case could be made that those numbers were largely a product of longevity (22 seasons is crazy long) and having a career OPS at 1B lower than most on the list (including 1 SS) could hurt as well (though that is the double edged sword portion of longevity).

Re: 2008 Hall of Fame Ballot
In Sale's defense, he was an 8 time All-Star. 2nd most on the ballot behind Hinson. And I understand his numbers are good because he played more games than anyone, but when you rank that high on the all-time leader board, you can't be punished for playing a long time. He's a no doubter IMO. I haven't voted yet, but Sale will be #1 on my ballot.

Re: 2008 Hall of Fame Ballot
That is why I include the OPS+ and ERA+. ERAs have been pretty consistent since the early 80s, but it is still good to use the comparative ratings like those two.agrudez wrote:Before voting, is there anything I should know about eras? Re: 2008 Hall of Fame Ballot
Sale's career numbers are clearly a measure of longevity, as is the case with the vast majority of Hall of Famers. If his career was 75% as long, he would probably not make it. However, it wasn't. There is a point at which longevity is exactly what makes someone a Hall of Famer. That is part of why stats like 3000 hits and 500 homers are usually automatic, both of which Sale has passed.

You have no idea how badly I wanted to put him in my bottom half.recte44 wrote:Let's get voting people. Riley Hinson- just do it.
He didn't make it there, though.
Btw, where is the love for Menne, Jr? Compiled 2000+ hits in, really, only 13 seasons of play and comes in with the 2nd best OPS+ on the list at the weakest offensive position available. Is the fact that WAR wasn't calculated for 95% of his career hurting his chances?
And Finch? An 11.06 K:9 for a 17 year career? 14 seasons with over 200K (and 2 more where he missed the mark by the slimmest of margins)? Absurd.
