2005 Hall of Fame Ballot

I apologize for the late ballot this year. Same deadline, however. Get it back to me by the end of the Championship series.

Very, very interesting ballot this year with some guys who probably deserve a shot but no slam dunks. Some new names that have been retired for a while as we had six people to replace on the ballot. Will Rashardo Menne, Jr. finally get some love as one of the best hitters in league history who also happened to play shortstop? Archie Ayrault is another one who hit like a first baseman but was a Slick Fielder at second. Commish's favorite, Riley Hinson, is sure to get some support. Flavio Luna is a first timer and the best hitter on the ballot. Zebediah Williams is the all-time steals leader by a long shot. Evander Kilkenny is one of the best pitchers in league history in spite of a relatively low number of wins. Timothy Regina isn't far behind him either.

I'm curious why Rashardo Menne, Jr. doesn't get more support. OBP monster. Twice the hitter as Glen Groves. 228 homers and 579 steals. And the guy was a good shortstop! What is he missing that keeps him from being higher on people's ballots?

Yeah, I dont know. Maybe i put Menne a bit too far down my list...but the relatively low number of career hits is what drives me away. There are only 5 people in the league who have more hits (and are in the HOF) than Steel and Groves. Likewise there are 14 who have more than Menne. This stems from his less than 2,000 games played...but its still an issue for me.

He was a SS, a factor that I rarely take into consideration (though I should...and did with Hinson this year).

So in my mind, he is at best the 4th best hitter. And then you have to contend with the # of HRs Smurf and Manzillo put up...the utter dominance Zebadiah Williams put up on the basepaths.

Honestly, in this class...I dont see many HOFers. This is a change from past years, where I felt 4-5 guys needed to be in, and I was worried that with our HOF rules some worthy guys would never get in...I guess I was wrong! I could make a case for 4-5 guys this year, but really, if this was the MLB style, "check everyone you think should be in the HOF" type ballot...I might not have more than 2-3 check marks.

I think there are several guys on this ballot with great arguments. No slam dunks, certainly. However, there are several who are the best hitters at their position. There are catchers and middle infielders with big offensive numbers. Great pitchers who are only lacking win totals but certainly won a great percentage. It is not the sexiest group of names we've ever had, but there are good candidates.

I just wish people would get away from the counting stats as an overall measure of greatness. That isn't to say that Groves isn't a good candidate. He certainly is, but that hit total is not the only reason.

Interesting balloting as one player is scoring enough votes to be very likely to get in this year. Meanwhile, most of the rest are stealing votes from one another. Voting all over the place. 7 players with first place votes. 14 players have votes in the top three. Two players with a first and a last place vote. Of the 14 with top three votes, 11 have votes in the bottom three.

That really doesn't surprise me. Having not been in the league long enough to see these guys play it was a tough ballot with not a huge degree of difference between many of the candidates. The tie breaker for me is go for the guys that have been on the ballot longer, because the others will have more chances, but only saw one sure thing.

There were 3 guys who were not listed as new this year to the ballot who were not on last years, did I miss something, or did some guys sneak onto the ballot this season?

Just realized I didn't comment on this. Sometimes I have to go back in previous ballots to find decent candidates for the new ballot. So, occasionally a player may get dumped off of the ballot and come back later or be placed on the ballot after have been bypassed previously. It depends on how strong the ballot is. I just try to find the 15 most qualified guys in any given year.
