2032, Hall of Fame Voting Chatter

Post by recte44 » Thu Jul 20, 2017 1:55 pm

Ballot is here:

As always, you MUST rank all 15 players in order.

Lots of new faces on this ballot- it should be interesting!

I'll put out my annual plug for Terry Cochran. This is just to compare him to the other hitters that are on the ballot. So among those on the ballot he is:

2nd in hits to Felix
1st in HR, over 100 above 2nd place. Also he has the most HR of any retired player NOT in the HOF.
1st in runs
1st in RBIs
1st in SLG
1st in OPS

There are 7 hitters on the ballot and this is how he ranks among them. There are 5-6 owners that put him 14th or 15th on the ballot every year because of their WAR fixation and not taking into account how WAR punishes DH. There is no way he is 14th or 15th. If you don't think he should be in than don't put him near the top of your list. But don't black ball him by putting him at the bottom.

I also think the other two guys that are running out of time should get a serious second look too. Linares doesn't have the traditional offensive numbers for a HOFer, but he did have a significant number of extra base hits and stolen bases. He also has 7 Zimmer Awards for CF. You know how hard it is to get a good CF and this guy won 7. Like Cochran he is a borderline HOFer, but if either is going to get in then it needs to happen this year or next.

McCabe is in his last year and again doesn't really have the career numbers. However he won the Nebraska 3 times and only pitched 11 years. There was a stretch of about 5 years where he was unbeatable. Reminds me of Jessie Wright in that they both had short but brilliant careers.

I'm not saying these are the top 3 guys, just saying they are short on eligibility and deserve a serious look.

Totally agree with Kevin- to some degree on Cochran, and especially on McCabe. How many players have won 3 or more Nebraska Awards?

I'm not sure about Cochran, but he's definitely a Calgary Hall of Famer. In the same way there is zero doubt about Cano, Cochran might have had to have been better playing his whole career in Calgary.

Not, admittedly, the strongest ballot ever.

If you are talking about the stadium, Cochran played all of his career in the old stadium that was not HR friendly to lefty hitters. If he had played all of it in our new one he would have at least 550. The stadium opened the year after he retired. Again, he is a borderline HOFer, just don't want him black balled like last year. It is overall a pretty weak ballot.

I can find quite a few players not in the HOF who are no longer eligible who are better than many of these guys. I'll be a little biased:

P John Rasmussen 188 wins 69.5 WAR (higher than anyone's on the ballot)
C Hurley Reyes 469 homeruns and 1487 RBI as a catcher 62.2 WAR (behind only Hoffman and Bautista on this ballot)

And then to not be biased:
Kevin Haubert 401 homeruns and 72.3 WAR
Robert Jowers Career .827 OPS at 3B and .309 average. 71.4 WAR

It may be time to re-institute the veterans committee and add 1 or 2 of these expired guys to the ballot. I think it would spark a little more debate and discussion. I'd like to see the result of the Weiss (who is likely going to be close to getting in) and Reyes as to who gets ranked higher when both are very similar players.

Nebraska (14), Bobovnic (5), Rockefeller (3), Riles Jr. (5), Izatt (3), Lasalle (3), Lee (5), Stoller (3), Strathallan (3), Swanson (3), Chapel Jr. (3), Diaz (4)

So 12 have done 3 or more.

I agree on Rasmussen. Had him high on my ballot certainly the last few years of eligibility. If he had 200 wins he'd of gotten in.
