How many relievers do we have in the Hall? The voting discrimination against them has always seemed pretty high. Maybe we should reduce their entrance criteria to 66.66% or something.

Agreed. Not sure about lowering the bar but can't understand people's reluctance to vote for them. I think I voted for 3 this year.

I make it a point to vote for at least one every year because they always get boned. This year actually seemed like a pretty deep class for them, though (probably due to the back log of them never getting voted in) so I think I voted for 3, too.

Bummed that Wilson didn't get in....again and that only half the league voted for Cochran. 9 more homers and he is probable on the bubble of getting elected.

I refuse to vote for a reliever unless they're a true stud. #JustinMarcoBias

Wilson was my top choice the last 2 years.

Only one of the 3 that got in received my vote.

Hitters with career OPS < .800 often have a hard time getting into OOTP HoF lists--though they stir a lot of debate and populate team HoFs all the time.

For a newbie owner who didn't live through Martin's years, he's an interesting vote. I included him on my ballot because he has all the earmarks of a guy who dominates games without a ton of thunder in his bat, but through a combination of OBP, speed, and stifling defense. One assumes ATC just dropped him in the leadoff slot and let him play for a decade and a half without any worry.

As far as the comparison, 5 AS games in 13 seasons vs. 2 in 14 seasons may give a newbie GM some indication of the relative idea of the league's evaluation of the two overall. Player B's couple fewer WAR in an extra season says B was a little less valuable on the whole...and since player B's homers are so much higher one suggests Player B's defense and legs were more in the league average category. Without doing the research, my pure guess is that I probably voted for Player B, too...but I can read the tea leaves a little and see a message that would rank the two on different tiers, but probably as much because Martin is fairly unique, whereas you can find a lot of guys who are basically "good hitters."

I just cannot get behind the "he played in x all star games" argument. I try my best to not even look at that.

You know I couldn't leave it there ... I chased down your comp. Bruner was clearly a good candidate, but he was like Martin without the speed and glove (but add in a HR bat). This does make him kinda like a number of players in the big picture. Not sure what happened in 2008, but that cliff event was apparently huge. If he had another three seasons to accumulate stats, he probably would have been an easy inclusion. Bruner also did not have the 1 mega-year that Martin had (Martin's 9+ WAR season ranks as one of the best 100 of all time. Definitely an interesting comparison.

These are things that make being a newbie a shade difficult, though.

If a player has an overwhelming number of them (>=50% of their total seasons) or a glaring lack of them (0 or 1), I think that is a valuable data point. The Hall should, in theory, be populated with the best players at their positions of their era, after all - though, on the flip side, I'm sure some guys got screwed playing in the JL when Crickett was rampaging, etc. so you still need the context. Using relatively small variances (3 in 13 vs. 4 in 12 or something) as a decision point seems a tad over the top, though. Particularly with the (reason I'm assuming you don't like using it) oddities of the ASG voting in general.

I think All-Star appearances matter; they indicate the length of a player's peak.
