2020, Hall of Fame Voting Results
The MBWBA Hall of Fame honors five new inductees this season.
Duane Whitley was a long time star for the Montreal Blazers. His career started by winning the Gillstrom Award in 2001, and continued greatness followed. He went to thirteen All-Star Games, and won the Frick League Silk Award four times (2002, 2012, 2013, 2014) including a three-peat from 2012-14. Whitley ended his career With New Orleans (2016) and Halifax (2017) and retired as one of the All-Time Greats. His 3217 hits are ninth on the All-Time boards, and his 1845 RBI rank sixth All-Time.
Dexter Sheehan was the straw that stirred Birmingham's drink from 2003-2017. One of the best catchers in our league's history, Sheehan was an eight time All-Star, and won the Silk Award in 2008. He also was fantastic behind the plate, winning a Zimmer Award twice in his career. He ended his career with a .310 lifetime average and 425 homers.
Davey Acheson was one of the best right-handed starters in his era. He pitched for Las Vegas (2000-2012), Hawaii (2012) and Calgary (2013-2016) before ending his career where is started back in Las Vegas (2017). Acheson's 248 career wins place him eighth on the All-Time list. He was an eleven time All-Star and winner of the Nebraska Award in 2005.
There may never be a finer relief pitcher in our league than was Jason Egan. Vancouver made him the third overall pick in 1997, and he made it to the show in September of that year giving a tantalizing taste of what was to come. Over his 21 year career, all with the Mounties, Egan set the standard for a reliever. His 753 career saves are not only the All-Time Record for the MBBA, but to put his dominance in context, they rank 168 higher than the second total on that list. Incredible. The discussion may now begin to rename the Gunga Award in his honor, he won an incredible nine of them during his career, along with an unprecendented 2007 Nebraska Award (never before been won by a reliever). He was an All-Star an amazing 15 times during his brilliant career.
Larry Lasalle was one of the better pitchers in the league during a brilliant run for the Baltimore Monarchs (now Brooklyn) franchise. It took him a while to get elected, and it was indeed the final vote of this years polling that put him over the top. He was 194-109 in his career, ranking only 38th on the All-Time Wins list, but it was his three Nebraska Awards (1999, 2000, 2002) that put this four time All-Star into the rankings of the All-Time Greats. He finished his career with Atlantic City in 2007 but will go in as possibly the last Monarch to be elected to the Hall of Fame.

Not an undeserving name on that list; nice to see Lasalle finally make it.
I'd say of all the catchers in the history of the league, none had remotely the peak that Dex had.

Re: 2020, Hall of Fame Voting Results
It's worth noting that these comprise two of the great underdog stories of all time. Dex Sheehan was drafted in the third round, and Duane Whitley was drafted in the FOURTH round; as far as I can tell they were the only two players in the Hall that weren't drafted in the top 40.

I'm glad Whitley made it. Helped the Hawks get to the Landis in 2017. I would love to see the number of Landis Cups won for some of these guys. I think it'd be pretty cool.

Whitley actually won back to back Landis' (Landises? Landisi?) with New Orleans in 2016 and Halifax in 2017. Now that's going out in style.crobillard wrote:I'm glad Whitley made it. No Wright. No Mitrani. No Wasson. Some Bison (and other team) players that don't look like they have any chance to get in, even though they had great careers.

Wasson and Mitrani were both great. All-time Bison players. Neither are worthy of the Hall though.mrbornac wrote:No Wright. No Mitrani. No Wasson. Some Bison (and other team) players that don't look like they have any chance to get in, even though they had great careers.
Wright is not even close. In fact if you take out his absolutely insane 2001 season, he gets downgraded from a great player to a guy who had a few really good years and a decent career.

Re: 2020, Hall of Fame Voting Results
Obviously I am biased but beg to differ on not even being close. Yes, his 2001 season of going 30-2 is insane. But look at his numbers over a 7 year period.bschr682 wrote: Wright is not even close. 1999: 12-4; 2.86 ERA (My first year in Madison. He was a reliever and I shifted him to the rotation immediately after taking over)
2000: 20-6; 2.89 ERA
2001: 30-2; 2.16 ERA
2002: 12-12; 4.34 ERA (bleh)
2003: 19-2; 2.58 ERA
2004: 18-10; 3.03 ERA
2005: 19-4; 2.82 ERA
That's a 7 year span in which he went 130-40. He was a top 3 pitcher over a 7 year span in the league in which he won 2 Nebraska Awards.
I guess it depends on how you evaluate HOF players. Are you going by career numbers or spans of greatness. Had he been used as a starter his first 2 seasons in the league, he would have likely eclipsed 200 wins.
Compare Wright to Lasalle that just got in:
Career numbers:
Lasalle: 194-109; 3.40 ERA; 2,413 Ks; 136 ERA+; 0 seasons of 250+ Ks
Wright: 187-97; 3.71 ERA; 2,560 Ks; 130 ERA+; 6 seasons of 250+ Ks
Pretty similar players. I've been voting Lasalle on my ballot every year and had him high on my ballot when Jason calculated them his way. You can make a strong case for Mitrani to be in the HOF too.

I agree, Wright was dominant for a long stretch - and had one of the very greatest seasons a pitcher has had in the post Nebraska era.
