Post by recte44 » Tue Oct 23, 2012 7:55 pm

Elected 1984

Born May 18, 1942 in the Dominican Republic
Drafted in 2nd round, 40th overall pick, by Las Vegas in 1973 in 1973 MBBA Dispersal Draft
Debut April 1, 1973

Won OCA Hitter of the Year Award in 1976
Was selected to the 1975, 1976, 1977, and 1978 All-Star Games
Won Landis Memorial Series in 1976 with Las Vegas

Elroy Futon could be considered the most well rounded hitter of the early years of the MBBA. From the first day the MBBA played ball, Futon ranked high upon the list of feared hitters.

The only real shame of Futon's career is that he came into the league as a 31 year old rookie. Las Vegas picked him to be their franchise player, as he had been in earlier MLB competitor leagues in his younger years. His best years being behind him, he still made quite a mark in the MBBA.

Elroy was a specimen to behold on the baseball field. At 6'3", 220 lbs, he was one of the strongest, yet most athletic players the league has seen. Elroy's speed was beyond compare. More importantly, he could hit the ball pretty much wherever he wanted to. The quintessential team player, Elroy was respected as a vocal leader and a leader by example.

He batted over .300 each season in the league with the exception of his last season. Elroy won the Owners Choice Batter of the Year in 1976, leading his beloved Hustlers to the Landis Memorial Series trophy.

A sad day came in 1979 as the Hustlers, aging rapidly, traded Futon to the Birmingham Bandits in a package deal. He was injured shortly after the deal; played only 8 games for the Bandits, and was then shipped off to the Austin Riverbats. In 1980 he returned with the Riverbats, and suffered another major injury, the third of his career (he missed a great deal of 1973 as well).

In 1981 he returned to the Hustlers as a part time outfielder. The Hustlers had hoped he would retire following the 1981 season, but his love for the game was such that he played part time for the Washington Bobwhites AAA affiliate in 1982, before finally retiring. After taking the 1983 season to enjoy life away from baseball, Futon returned to the league in 1984 to two treats: Being named the manager of the Las Vegas Hustlers and being elected to the MBBA's Hall of Fame.
