Great stuff... commenting as I listen.

Re: Farid bin Mubarak
Long Beach was my only suitor for Rocky Allen. Long Beach's cupboards are ridiculously empty. bin Mubarak was the only guy in his organization with legitimate potential to provide positive WAR (looking at Mubarak as a short side platoon) who Stephen would conceive of trading for Allen.

Rocky Allen wanted a 6yr/$60m.

Special thanks to Ron for reminding me about the FPL-no BBA Experience piece.

Rocky Allen won't negotiate an extension with me.

Consider yourself lucky. I thought the 6 year proposal was crazy. Id sign him to 2 tops.

I don't have the cap space for next year to sign any significant extensions anyway.

Your only real shot would seem to be to release Crepin and use that small window to reallocate funds due him.

I might be able to release Komen, since he's a non tender candidate, but Crepin has been great this year and there's a good chance I pick up his option for '45

It took a little work to get it down that far, but I think it captures all the original excitement. :)

I think bin Mubarak wasn’t given a fair shake, certainly by Ted.

• Ted projected a potential major league production of “.240 hitter with 25 doubles”...there are going to be less than ten catchers in the bigs that reach both those achievements this year.
• There are only eight major league catchers with 7 Contact, 7 Gap and 7 C Ability.
• The catching talent in the minors is TERRIBLE right now, so getting a backstop prospect with the potential to be better-than-replacement level isn’t bad, especially when it was for an expiring contract.

Now I don’t want to dump all on Ted...Ron, calling bin Mubarak’s outfield defense — and I use the term ‘defense’ extremely lightly — “a tiny small piece of value” is like calling a grain of sand “a tiny small piece of rock”.

I don’t think Shoeless (or anyone) is expecting bin Mubarak to be the next Hank Brewer. I think this was a very good deal for both parties, addressing needs now (defense, base running and depth for a contending Long Beach) and later (stocking the farm for a re-loading Sacramento).

Btw, the fact that a micro-transaction like the Allen/bin Mubarak deal (note: leaving off the bin from his last name is wrong, disrespectful and could end up you losing a hand in his home country) got so much coverage in a podcast is not only why the Brewster is the best OOTP league in existence, but also why The BBA Today is such a great podcast.

Finally got a chance to listen. You guys pretty much nailed Guillermo Sánchez for me. He's done nothing but get better every year, to include this one when our defense behind him is the worst he's seen. He's still only 23 and while not spectacular, its better to have the known costs for 3 years instead of playing the cat-and-mouse game of arbitration every year. Yes, if he were a little more popular, I may have played the game a little but I wasnt going to get any sort of FI bump out of an Unknown. I've tried many times to talk contracts with him but he wanted quite a bit more for 1 year and mainly only wanted to talk just the one year. This was just the second time that he would even talk about more than a one year contract. The AAV of $4M ended up being a savings of around $2-3M total, and with him wanting more and his yearly progression, I felt I would have ended up paying a lot more any way I went about it, except this one.

I will also say, that I havent really wanted to pay him that much for a while and have thrown him out there in many trade blocks and trade offers, but nobody really seemed interested. He'll be in Charlotte now for at least 3 more years, hopefully doing what he has been doing - making almost every start and getting better every year.

.245/.290/.380 is not a good hitter. That's what .240 with middling walk ability and 25 doubles looks like with no homers. Maybe he's more like .255/.305/.390. That's still a not very good hitter. 7 con 7 gap is a horrible hitter if you literally bring nothing else to the plate. bin Mubarak does have 5 Eye, so maybe he's just a bad hitter instead of a horrible one. If you are going to hit roughly zero homers, you have to be exceptional at something else to even get back to league average as a hitter, let alone be above average.

I got through 10 teams and I found 7 catchers better than the ".240 with 25 doubles" for bin Mubarek. Don't get excited about that contact. Non elite contact is only good if you do something with the ball when you put the bat on it. That means you have to have wheels, real gap power, or home run power. Bin Mubarek has none of those. He's just going to hit into outs instead of striking out and get a few more singles.

Ah man! I just finished therapy for the Mons Raider deal! Way to bring it up again. Trade was pre-me. I will have to do some research on that fleecing sorry trade paned out for all teams involved.
