The BBA Today - Ep 7 - Low Payroll Teams

Post by RonCo » Mon Apr 13, 2020 6:01 pm

Stephen Lane and Matt Rectenwald join me for a 15 minute deep-dive into the realm of low payroll teams, and what they might mean for the BBA universe going forward. Along the way Matt brings in a cool UMEBA fun fact, and Stephen does his historian thing.

Fumbling ensues.

I'm so damn proud to be in this league. Who needs "real baseball" when you have content and analysis like this? This seriously feels like a real Baseball Prospectus podcast or MLB Network segment. Awesome job!

First off, BEST BBAT since it mentioned the word, (and talked about charts) ;) Secondly, I flabbergasted that you would question how Ron and I spend our early mornings. Why look at this chart I made that shows my early morning schedule...

Seriously, this was wonderful. And bite sized which is perfect for me as I'm still dipping my toe into the shallow end of the BBA water. And nice to know that a few UMEBA teams have a bigger budget than Montreal!

Catching up on some podcasts tonight at work. Heard Montreal mentioned alot in the 3 episodes I listened to. Really hope I don't screw it up. Haha.

As for free agency, I have a hard time spending 30, 40, 50 million on a player. Think It comes from being a small market MLB fan, so I have to get that outta my head.

I don’t think anyone is saying you should spend that crazily. It’s the midrange guys where sure 10 mil is an overpay for their talent but you have so much space it won’t hurt. As long as you don’t throw out too many years on non elite guys you’ll be fine

I think if you have the money you absolutely should spend 20, 30 or more on a 1 year deal to fill a hole.

It's a truism that there are no bad 1-season contracts. That said, a long contract on a pitcher can blow up at times...but that's why I asked about the first year rather than the full run.

Caught this one on my ride home from working out (that's two podcasts listened for me in one day, a new record), good stuff fellas.

Finances was always an area I struggled at for many seasons. I just spent to the cap and said the heck with it after that. I think I got Madison in a bind a time or two but I think my budget was good enough then to handle it. After things went south, I had to figure out the finances and am finally feeling more comfortable with that area now. I keep a close eye on Portland's now, hoping to continue seeing it go up and projected to go up each season.

As for payroll, I make sure it all adds up. I have shitty players making too much right now, but feel that when I'm ready to start contending with Portland (if it ever happens), I'll have the finances squared away.
