Well, it looks like this isn't going to happen tonight, so I will go do something else. Maybe next time we can make it happen.

Well it pretty much turned into a podcast completely about Bucharest but that's alright. Will be posted asap.

Commenting as I listen...I always fill my full spring roster and either everyone gets some time or almost everyone. The kids play the first two weeks, the regulars play the last two weeks.

RE: Quezada and defense. If it's true that everyone is pushing bats and punting defense, then Quezada's defensive value will be amped up. I'm not sure how bad or good his bat will be in UMEBA, but he was replacement level in BBA.

----

Why would you do that big salary, then a player option at half price? Mostly because you figure (and probably even hope) he'll chose to opt out.

You'll be able to change ticket prices after the season starts again.

Every season you can spend your owner's budget, plus whatever cash you have on hand.

Your expenses are:

- Staff
- Active Players (this is what's constrained by the salary cap)
- Players/Coaches you've cut in the past and are still paying
- Draft pick signings (if you've budgeted it, your owner will keep you from spending it on players)
- IFA (but in UMEBA, I don't think you have that)

You also have to pay bonuses, but that only gets calculated at the end of the year, and your owner doesn't constrain things during the season based on it...so you have to be a little careful. Big bonuses can be hidden bombs if you're not paying attention. Do that math and you should be able to see where your $ available comes from.

I learned an awful lot from the podcast --- thanks for all the info you thoughtfully provided on the call, it will make it easier for me to compete with you (if not this year, then maybe next!).

It was so valuable to learn how the financials in the game actually work, especially how the budget, cash, and player payroll work. For example, one player I had got a season ending injury (plus part of next season) late in spring training. Since he would be an FA after this season anyway, there is no harm in my releasing him. It frees up his 1.2 million salary for someone else --- I still pay it, but I would have anyway.

It was a HUGE effort for me to cut players for start of season. I spent several hours on it last night. I made a big mistake to begin with --- I asked the computer to set up my whole organization. Unfortunately, he put several of my best players on irrecovable waivers. Fortunately, with what I learned on the podcast, I was able to "start over" so-to-speak, by deleting files and redownloading them. I appreciate that heads-up, I needed it! So I had to do all the hard work myself, but am reasonably happy with the result --- and I now have close to $8 million left in player payroll as opposed to $2.3 million before. Hopefully I will be able to take advantage of that surplus after season starts.

Thanks for the info, Ronco, about being able to change ticket prices after season starts --- I think I will definitely want to do that.

One possible mistake I have made is to cut Maximo Quezado and his huge salary (3.0 million this year, 3.6 million next), I wanted to send him to minors but he refused to go. I noticed he immediately popped up on the FA list with a 1.5 million salary request. So, my question is: what happens if someone signs him? Will that mean I will only be partially on the hook for his salary next two years, or will I still have to pay full freight regardless?

Thanks!

You still have to pay whatever his contract was when you cut him.

yeah, I guess I face the same frustrations of every GM (in real life, too!) when they have to deal with long-term decisions the previous GM made. I remember this happened with the Braves and the B.J. Upton deal they made, signing him for 5 years, $75 million contract in 2012. They were dealing with the fallout from that disastrous deal for years.
