2035 Offseason Trade Review
Tyler Simmons and Ted Schmidt review all the trades that occurred between the 2034 season's end the beginning of spring training. (This was recorded a week before it was posted). Also, I make Tyler pronounce all the tough names. Not even on purpose. It's great.

I think recite traded Lara because he needed the roster spot and Lara was out of options. So it was trade him or lose him on waivers.

This makes sense . There are just so many little details that make all the difference.

There have been so many deals in the past week that I'll probably just do another one this weekend or next

Re: 2035 Offseason Trade Review
You have the much harder podcast in that sense than I do...for analysis of both trades and free agent signings to make sense, you often have to go beyond base Value/$. That's hard to do unless you're able to spend, like, fulltime understanding every nuance of every team. This is, however, a game played by guys in their "spare time" (on both sides of the analysis). Sometimes GM's know exactly what they are doing, and a deal or signing still doesn't make sense from the outside. Sometimes GMs just make mistakes.Ted wrote:There are just so many little details that make all the difference.
How are you supposed to know which is which?
The podcasts I do are much more free-form, and opinion-minded to begin with.
So, yeah, just have fun. It all works out. I love the podcasts, regardless!
* BTW, I can chat you through doing bump music if you really want it. Once you've done it once, it's really easy. The time-consuming stuff for me is editing down stuff I record--which I do extensively, taking out "ums" and dead space, and sometimes even big chunks of answers if it makes the point in more entertaining ways...but then, I'm using this league's podcasts as practice.

Re: 2035 Offseason Trade Review
I've thought about heavier editing, getting rid of more stuff, but for me it's just not worth the time to make a more finished product (unless everyone else really wants me to do it). The work on the front end is intensive enough.

I don't think there's any reason to edit much unless you're getting something else out of it. The conversations are great as is. No apologies necessary at all. Just let your geek fly.

I don’t know whether it’s just me or my iPhone but I find the other (phone? Skype?) conversation very difficult to make out? Sounds like it’s down a deep well or tunnel, it was the same for the other FA podcasts

Re: 2035 Offseason Trade Review
It was a good listen - thanks for putting it together. For the hsv piece, I would be pretty disappointed if sullivan only turns out to be a stopgap starter. I look around the league - and maybe its my lh bias talking - and see him as a 50-60th percentile starter.

Re: 2035 Offseason Trade Review
MON/LOU...
Rather than thinking Montreal's deal for Juan Diaz won't matter in any way, I think it was pretty good. Diaz has a career OBP of about .340 and can play centerfield, making him one of the better backup CFs in the league. He can steal well and run the bases, which makes him a great pinch runner late in games. As long as he's $500K, which he is, that's a solid win. The fact that he's only got 1 year of service time makes it even better, as John can keep him around for another year if he wants.
I love these kinds of players. He'll be invisible to most everyone, but he won't play a ton so he won't really hurt you...but 3-4 times a year, he'll do something that helps you win a game. Kuddos to John.

Re: 2035 Offseason Trade Review
I also thought it was interesting to hear that we're suffering a dearth of catchers these days, I had literally been thinking of doing a feature on how many great catchers we have in the league right now.
DM: Cisco Arreola (7/8/10/9/9 Talents) - of course
MAD: Luis Barrera (8/8/8/6/8 Talents) - May be the best catcher in the league
LV: Hank Brewer (8/7/7/7/7 Talents)
LOU: Shag Hopkins (6/6/9/7/4 Talents)
NO: Hsin Mei (8/9/9/5/8 Talents) - May be the best catcher in the league
SFB: Luis Miguel Carrillo (5/6/9/10/7 Talents)
PHX: Andres Martinez (6/6/10/8/6 Talents)
YS9: Aaron Stone (8/8/9/8/5 Talents)
SA: Antonio Tobias (6/6/9/8/8 Talents)
MON: Joaquin Camacho (8/7/4/4/9 Talents)
RCK: Francisco Flores (8/9/6/4/9 Talents) - May turn out to be the best catcher in the league
---
That's 11 out of 30 teams that have superstar quality players at the catcher role ...
Then you have a whole phalanx of guys who are just good. Sean Smith (6/7/7/5/5 Talents) ... Sam Adams (5/5/9/7/3 Talents) ... Jake Blues (7/6/7/6/5 Talents) ... Elroy Hinson (8/7/6/7/9 Talents) ... the list goes on and on.
The difference in opinions and approaches are one of the things I love most about this league. But as far as I'm concerned we're in the middle of a golden age for catchers.

And, Hinson really should be up in the upper list, still...meaning LV has two superstar catchers.

I don't want to start a protracted debate over semantics, but that might be the loosest use of a term like "superstar" that I've ever seen.

Re: 2035 Offseason Trade Review
We'll see how long that lasts. Papadias is much better with the glove. If your offense is good enough to have a hole there, he'll work out. Otherwise, you'll go back to Carrillo. Regardless, I stick with my base thought. Carillo is a 3-4 WAR catcher if he plays enough, which is an All-Star kind of range.the irony with that is carrillo is playing DH for me at this point.

Shrug. I'll be happy to back off to just "star."agrudez wrote:I don't want to start a protracted debate over semantics, but that might be the loosest use of a term like "superstar" that I've ever seen.

I would agree with you, and I think my offense is good enough to sustain the OBP hole in the 8-9 spot with some bonus power down there.RonCo wrote:We'll see how long that lasts.
