2035 Johnson League FA Review
Kyle Stever and Ted Schmidt Review the 2035 Johnson League Free Agency Signings
In which I am really tired and also drunk by the middle, so I'm rambling off a lot. The last 10-15 minutes are mostly Stever and I just discussing things about the league. Some of it is (even more) boring, but there are a few interesting things in there.
Sorry for the dead space. Kyle and I didn't set a very good pace. Both of us think to much for this to pop right along. Believe it or not I removed like 5 minutes of dead air time already,

Lol yeah, not only did we buy a lot of that budget with points, what you don't see is that Luis Baca is still costing me $12 mil a year!

Re: 2035 Johnson League FA Review
worth noting on the discussion with greenwood and his WAR, lane pulls his starting pitchers crazy early and with WAR being a counting stat that will obviously put a damper on that. That being said, im still not as high on greenwood as many are.

Yes, but I think you yourself have raised questions about the games FIP and WAR calculations. I know it's supposed to, I just don't know if it's being done right.RonCo wrote:FIP- does get adjusted for park.

Re: 2035 Johnson League FA Review
I just want to go on the record saying that Jake Blues fucking sucks. He had bumped up to 8/8/6 against lefties and I chose him over Jim Miranda. Whoops.
Oh, and sure, I'd have liked to have Mendez but his asking price was $14m per for 4 or 5 years before he left and early in free agency. I figured he'd end up with a higher offer than he did, considering his wins and ERA the last 2 years. I kinda thought I was getting 2 for the price of 1; didn't think he'd sign for basically a 1-year, $7m contract.
Regarding player options, if you are afraid a guy will not execute a future player option (not an opt-out), the player option becomes guaranteed if you sign him to an extension.

Re: 2035 Johnson League FA Review
40 seconds was probably too much to describe our offseason.
The team should be pretty good though.

Re: 2035 Johnson League FA Review
I get the gripes. I wanted the last 2 years to be TO's, but he wasn't having it. I'm confident if he hit FA, I wasn't getting him back. For the most part, I am a "rather trade to early than two late" GM, but I wanted to keep him and didn't get an offer I loved. I think we can still compete with what we have and with his salary on the books.

Re: 2035 Johnson League FA Review
I'm 100% certain that FIP- is being done in a way that is "directionally right." I doubt that it's done in a way that perfectly matches real life, because it doesn't calculate real park factors. But it does do an adjustment and that adjustment is in the right directions.Ted wrote:Yes, but I think you yourself have raised questions about the games FIP and WAR calculations. One way you can tell is to go calculate a league average FIP, then figure out a non-park adjusted FIP-. You'll find that these are off in directions that make sense if you're not adjusting for parks in some fashion.
I did a fairly through testing on this a couple years back. So my only caveat on my statement is "assuming they didn't insert a new bug."
-----
I have no idea exactly how WAR is calculated, so I can't comment.
I am also fairly convinced now that what OOTP tells us is "Zone Rating" is a useful stat, but does not equate to what we think of when we think "Zone Rating." Still not sure how to assess it, though. Trying to get my brain to stop thinking "Zone Rating" and think something different is difficult.
