2033 podcast νούμερο τρία

Post by Ted » Mon Nov 20, 2017 8:55 pm

Randy Weigand and I discuss free agency. I didn't feel like time marking 28 teams, but it's alphabetical by team. This one gets a bit long, and I say "um" a lot. I say it so many times that I now know what it looks like as a waveform. We recorded this last Saturday, and within 24 hours Stu answered all our questions in a TN. Cuz he's a genius.

Also Randy develops a weird echo by the end for some reason I can't fathom or get rid of. Fun huh?

audacity. I think it's because of the way I mixed the tracks, which I'll do differently next time, so I didn't bother to figure it out. It's really not that bad, just sounds like he's speaking with a tin bucket on his head.

:crazylaugh: "Tyler has a plan that...I'm not always aware of", "I...don't....know...what Tyler's doing..."

Basically, I wanted a guy with a decent bat who can be a 1B defensive sub (as you stated, Rutledge is really a DH) who has some defensive flexibility and could [theoretically] step in at 1B in the event of injury to Rutledge. If you remember, the Rutledge injury nearly ended our season in May last year as we floundered with a combination of Josey Wales, Bertram Hahn, and Jorge Caballero at 1B/DH. He's really only the 4th option at 3B and will only play in a pinch. Basically, I had a lot of money burning a hole in my pocket after the Chip Chapel trade, so I picked up a $5 million luxury. I really wanted to bring Owen Stark back to fill that backup 1B/3B role, but didn't want to commit to $3+ million and 3+ years.

Worst case, we have a bunch of injuries to players not named Hahn or Rutledge and I have to move Lue for nothing. Moving a 1 year, $5 million contract should be no thang (hell, I could afford to flat-out cut him if the cap situation became dire). Best case? Lue is a great 1B defensive sub and a solid PH. Not really worth $5 million, and had I been more patient I might have gotten him for more, but I had the space and didn't want to hope that a guy with good enough defense at 1st (and a good enough bat to roster) would still be around at this time.

With Pagan, Gonzales, Ramos, and Lue, I have a very good defensive 2B between Pagan and Gonzales, and a damn good bench (even more so when Arbizo comes up)

Yep, my budget ballooned after moving to Nashville. I had about $2m available for FAs before the move so basically no use even looking at the market. Since moves don't take place until 1/1 the market has been picked clean. And I had negative cash w/ $10m per season due on my new stadium. Rebuilding in every sense of the word.

I love the effect of having the guy not named Ted answering questions over the publi address system!

Not bad, good listen

That’s a lot of work that adds greatly to the league

Thank you

And...Don’t feel too bad that you don’t understand Louisville moves...we’re operating on a higher level than what the rest of the league can understand

Logan is a platoon catcher. I've been platooning him. In the TN on signing Adams, I noted that my guy against LHP last year played in more games and only like 50 less AB's. So it's a straight, basically 50/50 platoon. If they put up 5+ WAR and hit 30+ HR's together, it's well worth their combined salaries.

Just didn't see anyone that made me want to make a splash. Had to be a little conservative with core players getting raises next season. Delgado, who wasn't mentioned, was a solid move in my opinion between getting a solid SP and freeing up cap space next year. That one just backfired. Stanza, I knew that was a gamble. Probably will fall back a bit, but should still be in the mix.

we made the conscious decision not to talk about trades, otherwise we might still be recording. That is why delgado (and some other big moves by other teams) were not mentioned.

That's fine. I was just throwing out there that I made an attempt to address the SP other than Stanza and some other small moves.

I did! I rather enjoyed it. For the most part you were spot on with what I was thinking.

At the time I signed Cunnningham I had multiple offers out, and the $1.4 was all I could offer to stay under the cap. I needed a more right handed outfield, and my desire for rangey CFs is almost as strong as my desire for high MOV pitchers. With the exception of 2030, he's been a destroyer of lefties, so I saw it as a worthwhile improvement over all glove no hit Jorge Garza.

Keating is basically insurance against Becker ageing, and since he's only 29 I felt ok giving him a few years. Sure he's an expensive insurance policy, but we can afford it.

Mostly though I was trying to make sure I had a lot of space left for what I see as a much better FA class in the 33-34 offseason.

i sometimes feel at a bit of a disadvantage not having been in the league for awhile so i don't know the history of some of the guys so I'm having to look at it a different way than someone like ted who has seen most of these guys their whole career.

I agree. He's not stuck with all the baggage of knowing who the player used to be.

i do think that worked well, the balance and dynamic between us. That and we are similar type talkers (both like to ramble a bit and not exactly shy about speaking our minds on certain topics).
