Incumbent closer Mario Santos saved 118 games from 2060-2063, but struggled in 2064 with a 4.27 ERA and just 19 saves. Feeling a change of scenery might suit the player best, Boise made the difficult decision to put their former 2057 first round draft pick on the trade block. The money due to Santos – 4 million in both 2065 and 2066 – was reportedly also a factor in GM Mike Bauer’s decision to make the reliever available. An offer was received from San Fernando, and the two sides soon came to an agreement.

Santos was dealt to the Bears in exchange for A-level SP Orlando Hernandez and Short A-level RP Wilson Rosado. Hernandez was drafted in the 3rd round by the Bears in 2064, while Rosado was the 6th round selection from the most recent amateur draft.

Freeing up the 4 million in cap space will provide some flexibility and a bit of relief after trading for Malik bin Mazin and his considerable salary. In Bauer’s first season, the team is reportedly taking a wait-and-see approach. They may make other acquisitions as the season goes on depending on their win-loss record and the pedigree of players who become available via waivers.

“We wish the best to Mario and thank him for all of his contributions in Boise,” said Bauer. “San Fernando is getting a good guy with a good arm. And we’re getting two young pitchers that have our minor league staff very excited. We’re looking to step up the quality of pitching in the minors, and that will pay dividends down the road.”
