June seemed pretty terrible, and it was at 11-17, but the Spuds turned in a 12-17 record in May so maybe we here at The Times should pull back on the dramatics. Still, July is a new month and Boise wanted to start in a positive fashion. It was a mediocre fashion as the Spuds split with Brooklyn at home, but that's positive in Idaho.

The schedule would appear to show two back-to-back whoopings of Boise at the hands of the Robins to start the 4-game set, but the score in the opener is deceiving. Reyes had a decent start allowing 4 runs in 7 innings and the game entered the 9th with Brooklyn holding a 4-2 lead. That's when Boise setup man Juan Guzmán gave up the good 'ole onion (slice, slice, slice, DICED). Three singles, a walk, and the Grand Slam to Robins 2B Alfredo 'Cookie Monster' Trujillo. The next evening's game really was a whoopin'. Brooklyn banged out 14 runs on 20 hits torching everyone from starter Nickerson to middle relief man Jack McNeil. Trujillo enjoyed the taste of the grand slam from the night before so much he gobbled up 2 home runs collecting 4 RBI and Robins 1B Emilio 'Junior' Morales, Jr. was a smooth 3-6 scoring 3 times and driving in 2 runs. But Boise, facing yet another series loss and possibly getting swept headed into the All-Star break, pulled themselves together. It started with bin Khairy holding Brooklyn to 2 runs in 7.1 innings, striking out 6, then Santos took the save and converted. The scoring was early in the finale with the Robins putting up a run at the top of the 1st then Boise responding with 2 in the bottom of the frame. That set the tone as Kankipati tossed 5.1 innings of 1-run ball allowing only 2 hits. Spuds relievers Tim Stops and Paul Cherry ushered the game to Santos who converted yet another save, his 13th on the season after missing roughly a month between April and May.

Ouch - VAL has had its share of those this season. Did Brooklyn at least have the courtesy to give him the game ball?
