Boise is best at keeping things mediocre because we've seen them at their worst. This Sim was a tidy 3-3 with the Spuds splitting two series. Oddly, the most lopsided wins belonged to them. The offense has awakened somewhat in June but, of course, that's relative. Pitching has gone the other direction. Starters are outstretching their reach and faltering at the end of outings. We will see how GM Ben Teague addresses that...if he does.
@ Rocky Mountain 2-6 L
@ Rocky Mountain 5-4 W
Splitting a 2-game set at the Oysters place is nothing to complain about. In the opener Boise starter Héctor Fuentes allowed just 1 run thru 5 innings, but imploded in the 6th and 7th to allow all of the Oyster's runs. On Rocky Mountain's hill was Ommar bin Ayyub whom Spuds may remember starting in Boise at the beginning of the season. He pitched 5.1 innings of shutout ball. The next game had late-game dramatics for the Spuds who entered the 9th inning trailing 4-2. But Oysters' reliever Michael Dixon couldn't find the strike zone and issued 2 walks and a single to load the bases. Then Boise scored on an RBI single, a hit by pitch with the bases loaded, and a final, winning RBI single from SS Qutuz Mahdi.
v San Antonio 4-0 W
v San Antonio 12-6 W
v San Antonio 2-4 L
v San Antonio 1-2 L
This 4-game series was a split that was almost a sweep. Boise opened the first game starter Jeremy Nickerson made his first start in a Spuds uniform and it was a beauty. The righty allowed only 3 hits and no runs over 8 innings while fanning 6. Meanwhile, Boise 2B Marcello Custello went 3-for-4 scoring twice and delivering 2 RBI. Struggling starter Logan Hill took the mound the next night delivering a rare quality start in what has been a horrid stretch of late. The offense exploded all over Outlaws starter Kent Pickford scoring 9 runs on 12 hits. Spuds 3B Gary Allen and Mahdi delivered 3 and 5 hits, respectively, and Allen had a spectacular 5 RBI on a double and a homerun. When Boise posted 2 runs in the first inning of the 3rd contest Spuds fans surely had sweep in mind. But that's all Outlaws' SP Edmond Thomas would allow the rest of the night. SP Bill Keefe was, again, great thru 5 innings but allowed 3 runs in the 6th and that was all San Antonio needed. The finale was a beauty of a pitchers' duel. Outlaws SP António Báldez and the Spuds starter Héctor Fuentes were both spectacular with Fuentes allowing 1 run in the 3rd. Boise evened the score with a solo HR from DH Alfonso Rúbio in the 8th, but the 'human pucker factor' CL Harold Nothard couldn't keep the Outlaws off the board in the 9th as they pushed across the winning run.
