(2054.02) Rookie Profile: Logan Hill
Logan Hill, SP
Hometown: Omaha, NE
BBA debut: Aug 18, 2053
On the surface, there’s nothing extraordinary about the rookie pitcher at the back end of the Spuds’ rotation. Logan Hill is a lanky, unassuming Nebraskan with a mustache and a 5.37 ERA. But the story of how he got here is pretty interesting.
Hill was nothing special in high school or college, just a hard-throwing reliever with some control issues, capping off his unremarkable college career with a bloated 8.17 ERA his junior year.
He was drafted in the fifth round of the 2051 draft by his hometown team, the Omaha Cyclones. He happily signed on without a signing bonus (it was the team he grew up rooting for — hell, he would’ve paid them for the chance to play), but was promptly released two weeks later, a casualty of the minor league roster crunch at the start of the Rookie and Short A-ball seasons. Vancouver scooped him up as a minor league free agent.
An interesting thing happens when a player is drafted and signed, released, and then signed again as a free agent. He becomes eligible immediately for the Rule 5 Draft, without having to play for the standard 4-5 years, in a weird little loophole, because his first professional contract was terminated. Normally, this doesn’t matter, because they’re typically trash minor leaguers that nobody wants anyway. Which is exactly what Hill was, even after his first season in the Mounties’ organization, where he still struggled with control and pitched to an ERA in the high sixes. The Rule 5 came and went that December; Hill was eligible, but no one had any reason to take him.
But in 2052, Hill figured it out. Vancouver converted him into a starter, Hill tinkered with his mechanics a bit, and the ERA went down. Down to 4.30 in A-ball. Then to 2.67 in Double-A. He developed some serious movement on his splitter, which become his main put-away pitch. All of a sudden, he was looking like a seasoned pitcher, ready for the big leagues.
The Rule 5 draft came again. And Boise agreed that Hill looked like he should be starting in the big leagues, so they made him their first pick. Vancouver didn’t protect him, so just like that, he was a Spud, and earning a major league salary.
Following the Spuds’ acquisition of Hill, there was some shuffling behind the scenes, and Boise sent a minor prospect to Vancouver in exchange for the removal of Hill’s Rule 5 restrictions. But don’t think that means Boise was any bit unconvinced that Hill was their starter of the future. The deal just gave them the chance to give him a bit more seasoning in Triple-A before starting his BBA career.
Hill was called up in August 2053, and pitched in nine games for a Spuds team on their way to a 96-loss season. He wasn’t good, but that wasn’t really the goal. That was all about getting Hill some low-pressure BBA experience. His real BBA career would begin in 2054.
As Boise’s fifth starter this season, Hill has had mixed results, but looking at some of his peripheral stats, he’s done well to limit hard contact and keep the ball in the ballpark. He could stand a few fewer walks and a few more strikeouts, but he’s still on his developmental path so hopefully those numbers will improve in time.
Hill is one of a handful of highly-anticipated rookie starters in the BBA this year, and certainly Hill’s debut has been nowhere near as notable as that of Jacksonville’s Bob Anderson, or Chicago’s Carlos Moya, who have both taken to the BBA as if they’ve been here for years. But Hill, as the BBA’s #27 prospect, is still expected to develop into one of the top pitchers of the next generation. Just give him some time (much in the way Omaha didn’t).
