In late September, long having since been eliminated from playoff contention, the Boise Spuds announced the signing of veteran reliever Dave Houston to a one-week contract, giving the old fan favorite one last moment on a major-league mound.
Houston is a well-known face in Boise. He has pitched the fourth-most games of any pitcher in Boise’s history, as the team’s primary setup man during most of the late ‘40s. He had a pretty solid tenure with the club, including a remarkable 2047 season in which he posted a 2.29 ERA as one of the premier late-inning arms in the league.
This time around, he pitched exactly one inning in a game in Mexico City, allowing a single, a couple walks, and an inherited runner to score, but he escaped with an ERA of zero, which is the number that will appear on his baseball card next to his final BBA season.
His outing won’t make headlines. It barely made the Boise Spuds’ forum. Houston was happy to go quietly into retirement after not receiving any contract offers from teams this season. But he was a Good Spud, and he deserved this moment.
