Tater Talk: 2046.04 – Month In Review: May '46

Image While Boise kicked off the 2046 season with a 10-3 record and +50 run differential, the month of May was a massive fall from grace. The Spuds went just 13-16 with a combined run differential of +17, thanks to four wins by at least eight runs, including a 15-1 drubbing of Phoenix on May 5th. Thru the first two months of the year, the Spuds are 29-27, two games back in the Frontier behind red-hot Calgary.

Spud Hitter of the Month: For the second straight month to start the year, a Boise bat was named Player of the Month. In April, it was Dennis French (.425/.470/.689 for the month) and in May, Felix Roman was the man swinging the hottest bat in the Johnson League. All Roman did was hit .405 with 11 home runs and 29 runs batted in while chipping in seven stolen bases. His strong April combined with his insane May has him atop the Johnson League WAR leaderboard with 3.1, trailing only Vancouver's Jeffrey Smith (3.2) for league lead. Despite the Spuds record finishing sub-.500 for the month, it wasn't due to lack of offense, as Ricardo Ruiz knocked in a ridiculous 43 runs in 28 May games, slashing .381/.398/.698.

Spud Pitcher of the Month: By default of being the only Boise pitcher with a FIP under 4.00 for May, Robin Cooper was the "best" pitcher for the last 31 days. Cooper went 2-2 in five May starts, tallying a 4.05 ERA and 1.29 WHIP. For the season, Cooper is 6-4 with a 3.56 ERA and 1.33 WHIP.
