Tater Talk: 2046.03 – Month In Review: April '46

Image The Spuds started the season about as strong as possible, coming out the gate after two weeks with a 10-3 record and league-leading +50 run differential. The club finished April going 6-7 with an appropriate -10 RD. Through the opening month, Boise found themselves 1.5 games up in the Frontier over plucky Las Vegas.

“It was a good month, no doubt,” manager Nicholas Abadee told reporters. “We had some huge performances out of our bats and our pitching is starting to take shape after some of the kids showed improvement last year.”

When asked about their position atop the standings, Abadee said “It’s nice to bank those early wins, but we have a long way to go. There are some really hungry teams in the Frontier and you can never count out Edmonton.”

Spud Hitter of the Month: While Dennis French had the best showing in all of the Brewster during April, slashing .425/.470/.689 en route to winning the Johnson League Hitter of the Month Award, it was Pepe Madrid’s hot start that likely have Boise in first place through April. Madrid, coming off a 97 OPS+ season in 2045, hit seven home runs during the month, nearly one-third of his HR total from last year (22). In addition to the power, the lefty-swinging first baseman hit .362 and drew a team-high 10 walks, all culminating in an opening month slash line of .362/.429/.738.

Spud Pitcher of the Month: After spending all of 2045 in Double-A, Andino Bianchi returned to the majors via December’s Rule 5 Draft. With Boise’s bullpen in dire straits, the 31-year-old was plucked away from Frontier Division-rival Calgary in the third-round and stuck with the team after an impressive spring training (1.29 ERA, 0.86 WHIP in 22 innings). Bianchi continued his revitalization in April, going 1-0 with two saves and two holds in 10.2 scoreless innings.
