Tater Talk: 2045.07 – Boise Announces '45 Team Awards

Post by jleddy » Mon Feb 01, 2021 1:28 pm

Image The Spuds finished the 2045 regular season grabbing the final Johnson League playoff spot, resulting in a surprising run to the Johnson League Doubleday Series. It was Boise's third trip to the playoffs in its short eleven-year history and was the first time the Spuds had advanced in a playoff series. In a very successful season by all accounts, there was plenty of hardware to handout at the Spuds' 2045 awards ceremony.

Felix Roman was not only up to his usual ways, but pieced together a career year for the Spuds. Roman finishing the year leading the Johnson League in several catagories: home runs (58), runs batted in (153), slugging percentage (.692), on-base plus slugging (1.100) and WAR (9.4). All five marks were not only career-highs for Roman, but set Boise team records as well. In all aforementioned categories, Roman lead the entire Brewster outside of OPS, finishing third behind Twin Cities' David Simpson (1.149) and Madison's Manobu Shimizu (1.112). At the time of press, Roman was also comfortable leading voting in the Johnson League Sawyer Silk Award and Johnson League Puckett Golden Bat for centerfield. If Roman holds on, it would be his first career Silk Award and second Puckett Golden Bat. For his outstanding contributions at the plate and in the field (0 errors in 1398 innings, +4.9 Zone Rating, 1.021 Efficiency), Roman easily earned the 2045 Most Valuable Potato Award. This is Roman’s third time earning the honor and second season in a row.

There were a few bright spots on the pitching side in Boise, however the Spuds likely owe a great deal of their success to veteran southpaw Miguel Ramos. Ramos, in his final year with Boise after coming over in a 2044 pre-season trade, showed signs of the pitcher who won the Nebraska Award for Sacramento in 2037. Ramos went 14-9 with a 3.98 ERA in 201 innings. The 34-year-old veteran chipped in a 1.21 WHIP and 8.0:2.7 strikeout-to-walk ratio, good for a 3.3 WAR. For his efforts, the Spuds rewarded Ramos as Boise's Pitcher of the Year for 2045.

As previously announced, Antonio Romero was named Boise's Minor League Player of the Year for 2045.

Nice write-up! I love the Most Valuable Potato award, and it's pretty clear Roman deserved it.
