Tater Talk: 2045.001 – Boise Announces Rookie Team Relocation
PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 14, 2044
MAZATLÁN, Mexico -- On Monday morning, the city of Mazatlan and the Tijuana Cutthroats announced their intent to relocate the Spike Nolan League club to the city in the western part of the state of Sinaloa, Mexico. This ends Tijuana's run as the home of Boise's Rookie League affiliate, which has called Taxi Field home since inception in 2035. The team will remain in the Mexican-American Division.
The Cutthroats have been trying to find a host city over the past year, after growing number of reports of violence and vandalism spilled from the streets of Tijuana and directly affected fans, players and baseball officials, culminating in a violent attack after a July game that left a man in critical condition. The victim recovered but suffers lingering physical and mental pain.
Speaking outside at the Port of Mazatlán, Boise Spuds CEO Wynn Callen revealed that the team had reached an agreement with Mazatlán-based beer manufacturer Cerveza Pacífico Clara and the club's new ballpark would be named "Pacífico Park." The ballpark was built in 2020 for the independent Mexican Baseball Association but had not had a full-time tenant in several years.
A name change will accompany the move as well, with the new team being called the Mazatlán Guardafaros. The name, loosely translated into "Guardians of the Lighthouse", is inspired by the landmark El Faro Lighthouse in Mazatlán, the highest natural lighthouse in the Americas and one of the highest operating lighthouses in the world.
First lit in 1879, El Faro is now one of the top tourist attractions in the city of Mazatlán. It can
be visited by hikers up close and the view from the lighthouse is also a big draw for visitors.
"We wanted to transition from the negativity associated with the violence and crime of Tijuana and the name 'Cutthroats'," Callen told reporters. "Mazatlán is a beautiful city with wonderful tradition and is a thriving vacation location. The history of the lighthouse means so much to the people of Mazatlán so it only made sense to honor it and them with this re-branding."
In a ceremony, the team unveiled the new logo, cap and jerseys for the 2045 season.

Looks sweet. My players will miss Tijuana, though...

Don’t worry, the Guardafaros are taking the donkeys with them to Mazatlan.

Safety? No way. Rival gangs from Tijuana now going to inflict terror in Mazatlan now. You've just started a territorial war in Mexico.
