Tater Talk: 2044.011 – Fan In Critical Condition After Attack in Tijuana

Image A Cutthroats fan is in critical condition after being attacked in the Taxi Field parking lot following a game between Tijuana and Port Arthur Pythons on Monday, according to Lupe Medina of the Tijuana Times. Police are looking for two suspects and they say the attack does not appear to be related to fan rivalry. The Cutthroats are the Rookie Level team of the Boise Spuds.

According to reports, at about 6:30 p.m. Friday, roughly thirty minutes after the Pythons defeated the Cutthroats 7-5, witnesses flagged down Tijuana police officers patrolling the game and alerted them to the altercation. The victim and a relative were walking through the parking lot when the men physically attacked them for no apparent reason, Lt. Jaime Blanco of the Tijuana Police Department said. The assailants kicked and punched the victim to the ground, then stabbed the fan six times in the midsection, Blanco said.

The victim, a 43-year-old man, was unconscious when taken to a nearby hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

The incident is part of a string of crimes around Taxi Field this season. In April, umpire Omar Neflin was carjacked after a game, suffering minor injuries. In June, two scouts from the Berkeley Golden Bears, the Rookie Level team of the Sacramento Popes, were kidnapped and held for ransom until being let go several hours later. Last month, the statue in front of the stadium of George Heredia, the first Tijuana-born player in the Brewster Baseball Association, in front of the stadium was vandalized and destroyed beyond repair.

In addition to the criminal issues surrounding the Cutthroats, the city of Tijuana has been named North America's top crime-ridden city for the 53rd year in a row. Tijuana ranks #1 per capita in murders, drug trafficking, crimes against women and auto theft, according to a government study. The U.S. State Department has labeled the city of Tijuana as being a “critical threat location” for crime directed at or affecting official U.S. government interests.

"We've been exploring several options," Boise owner Francis Nephi Grigg IV said when asked if the team plans on relocating. "We've had a lot of pressure to change the name of the team because of its violent nature, and frankly, that is long overdue. Tourism is down in the area and the violence is causing issues with trying to draw fans for what should be a good time at the stadium, not a potential for danger."

According to sources, Boise officials have been speaking with cities about the potential of moving the team to a new location. The Cutthroats currently place in the Mexican-American Division of the Spike Nolan League and would need to remain within the region of Mexico or southwestern states in the US. "There's been talk about about a BBA team potentially re-locating the Southwest, so we'll be mindful of that," Grigg told reporters. "There has also been rumors of another franchise potentially moving to Baja California as well, and by all means, they can have it. What's most important for us to be in a city that is safe for our fans and players."
