Tater Talk: 2044.002 – Junior Spuds Show Promise in Florida

Image After two straight Florida Prospect League second-place finishes under manager Orval Ryals, the Spuds of Ybor City finally broke through in 2043, going 22-6 en route to a post-season berth. Ryals, whose first three years at the helm of the FPL team is an impressive 63-21 (.750), was impressed by this year's collection of talent. "It was a fun group to manage for the past month," Ryals told Prospect Passport, a blog covering minor league news in the Brewster Baseball Association. "There are more than a handful of future major leaguers in this bunch."

Two Spuds took hardware back home in their carry-on luggage for their winter efforts: centerfielder Carlos Blanco (zero errors in 76 chances, one assist, 1.032 Defensive Efficiency) won the Great Glove Award at CF while catcher Rafael Mendoza was given the Platinum Stick Award as the best hitter at his position. After a stellar debut in Single-A (.314/.406/.531) in which Mendoza took home the regular-season Platinum Stick Award, the 2042 third-round selection continued to terrorize pitchers, slashing .338/.444/.713. Right-handed starting pitcher Mitch Freemann (5-0, 1.13 ERA, 0.72 WHIP) placed third in FPL Pitcher of the Year Award voting.

Several other Ybor City Spuds had outstanding seasons in Florida and the front office of the big league club hopes they carry over their performances come 2044.
