Tater Talk: 2041.17 – Week in Review, 5/12 - 5/18

Image WEEK IN REVIEW: (5-1) Boise took advantage of a week-long homestand, taking two of three (and three of four overall) from feisty Edmonton, then sweeping a three-game series against lowly Wichita. The big week increased the Spuds lead in the Frontier Division by four games and has Boise (.690) narrowly ahead of Louisville (.674) for the best record in the BBA.

ORE-IDA® TATER-TOTS EMOJI SUMMARY OF THE WEEK: 🥇🤷🏻‍♂️

HITTER OF THE WEEK: Ricardo Ruíz - 7-for-21, 3 HR, 9 RBI (.333 AVG, 1.185 OPS)

PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Dave Walsh - 3 G, 5.1 IP, 2-0, 1 SV (3.38 ERA, 1.31 WHIP)

GAME OF THE WEEK: On May 16th, Boise needed extra innings to defeat Wichita, 9-8. After seven Spuds crossed home in the bottom of the 7th inning, Boise found itself up 8-5. But in rare shaky performance by the Boise bullpen, reliever Jesús Arce blew his first save of the year, giving up three runs in the 9th, including a home run to star third baseman Alex Ramírez, allowing Wichita to tie it up. Both teams failed to score in the 10th, then in the bottom of the 11th inning, Jared Gillstrom hit a walk-off solo home run, his 13th dinger of the year, capping another wild win by Boise. Reliever Martín Torres pitched both extra innings to earn the win, moving his season totals to 3-1 and 2.25 ERA. "It was a nice win for our side today," said Spuds manager Millard Davis. "Not perfect, but we'll take it."

NEWS AND NOTES: Waiver-wire claim Miguel Angel Perales played sparingly in his first action for Boise, starting two games at DH and going 2-for-8 with one run and one walk...with DH/C Cisco Arreola due to come off the injury list after next week, Perales will have to show the coaching staff he's earned his spot on the active roster...starter Leroy Hoffman exited his May 15th start in the fourth inning after experiencing back tightness...the combination of the injury and his struggling performance on the year (1-4, 6.62 ERA) caused Boise GM Joe Lederer to make the decision to send Hoffman down to Triple-A Salt Lake City and work out his issues...in a corresponding roster move, lefty swingman Bill Carter was recalled to Boise...at Salt Lake City after an early season demotion, Carter has gone 2-0 with 1 save and a 2.35 ERA...thanks to Boise's schedule next week, the team will use a four-man rotation with Carter slated to pitch out of the bullpen in a long relief and lefty-specialist...the 2041 BBA First-Year Player Draft recently concluded and Boise will have approximately a month to get their draftees signed and assigned to respective minor league teams

DOWN ON THE FARM: Salt Lake City (AAA) went 3-4 during the week but still find themselves leading the Western Division with a 27-18 record...luaded prospect Carlos Díaz (4-3, 5.32 ERA, 1.42 WHIP) was sent to Double-A Weymouth while fellow prospect Robin Cooper (6-2, 2.97 ERA, 0.82 WHIP in AA) was promoted to Salt Lake City...Weymouth (AA) went 4-3 for the week, including a 20-2 drubbing of Newton Falls Flying Tigers...the Irish lineup rapped sixteen hits, including eight home runs, and drew eleven walks in the blowout...starter Seitaro Ugaki was placed on the 60-day injured list after a partially torn labrum was discovered...team doctors believe Ugaki can return to action before the end of the year, however Boise has traditionally limited their pitchers' workloads, especially in injury recovery, under GM Lederer...DH Emílio Baca took out his early-season frustrations on opposing pitchers, swatting six home runs during the week, raising his slash line to .252/.285/.545...Tulsa (A) took four of seven and find themselves 19-26 (5th place in the division)...outfielder Jude Carter was named Player of the Week (5/6 - 5/12) in the Baxter League, rocked opposing pitching for a .409 average (9-for-22), 4 home runs and 8 RBIs to come away with the award

This usage is almost acceptable.

And, yeah, I hope Perales sticks.

Let’s hope the Spuds aren’t using non-stick cookware!
