Tater Talk: 2041.02 – Boise FO Deem Arbitration Rulings "A Success"

Image Prior to arbitration hearings taking place on November 22nd, the Boise Spuds had thirteen cases to resolve. The team immediately withdrew offers to relief pitchers Samuel Cant, Joe Clements and Marcos Sánchez, second baseman Ramón Vela, outfielder Pedro Holguín and utility-man Guy Webb.

GM Joe Lederer said the decision to non-tender the group of players was "fairly easy," however Lederer was quoted in regards to Holguín that "he really stepped up during his time up in Boise and we'll possibly look to bring him back in a similar role, if possible." Holguín spent the better part of the last two seasons as a platoon left fielder, putting up a combined .764 OPS, including a .290/.375/.426 slash line against right-handed pitchers in 2040. It is believed the failure to extend an offer to Holguín is due to prospect left fielder Ricardo Ruíz, who is expected to take over the position at some point in 2041.

PLAYER2040 SALARYTEAM OFFERPLAYER DEMAND
Dennis French$7,000,000$9,800,000$10,000,000
Yunosuke Terada$4,130,000$4,280,000$5,750,000
Pancho Germán$500,000$3,740,000$4,250,000
Dave Walsh$500,000$950,000$1,250,000
José Rivera$750,000$830,000$1,250,000
Pedro Díaz$700,000$800,000$1,250,000
Carlos Muñóz$750,000$675,000$1,250,000
Overall, the team went 4-3 in arbitration, with notable raises to French, the 2040 Johnson League Sawyer Silk Award winner, and Germán, an All-Star in 2039 who failed to build on his breakout season. Terada and Muñóz have been publicly made available on the trade block and after arbitration, their respective 2041 salaries are still considerably team friendly. Interestingly, Muñóz saw his salary decrease by $75,000 after a tough 2040 campaign that saw the first baseman slash only .220/.325/.340.

With arbitration hearings in the team's rear view, Lederer turns his attention to free agency. It is expected Boise is targeting several players and hope to land a few impact free agents with just over $50M available to spend.
"My $#!? doesn't work in the playoffs." - Billy Beane Joe Lederer
