Tater Talk: 2041.01 – Spuds Retire For The Winter (And Beyond)

Post by jleddy » Thu Dec 12, 2019 11:44 am

Image Just weeks after the conclusion of the memorable 2040 Landis Memorial Series, Boise was caught off-guard on November 11th when manager Jorge Acevedo and designated hitter Norris Rutledge held a joint press conference to announce their retirements from baseball.

Acevedo, 63, was signed mid-season this past year after a front office shuffling of the Boise coaching staff which included then-manager Barrett Callahan promoted to Assistant General Manager. Acevedo had guided Mexico City to two straight playoff appearances in 2038 and 2039 and won the Triple-A championship in 2037.

On November 20th, Boise announced Acevedo's successor, former Madison manager Millard Davis. Davis, winner of the Manager of the Year Award in 2032, led the Wolves from 2030 to 2039, making four playoff appearances and record of 801-819 in 10 years. "Millard has a tremendous reputation around the league," General Manager Joe Lederer told the media. "He has the ability to use analytics along with his great eye and gut instinct. Plus he's a player's manager and improving team chemistry is a huge goal for this off-season. He's a fantastic fit for this club."

When asked about Boise's internal philosophy, dubbed "The Great Wheel™", Davis seemed on-board. "It was brought up during my interview and once I was officially hired, I was provided with all the information. It's a bit overwhelming, but at the end of the day, I completely agree with where the Spuds are heading and how they intend to get there."

Davis, 55, signed a five-year contract that will pay him just north of $1.8M per season.

Rutledge's retirement was more of a blessing than it was a surprise, however the Boise front office was shocked at the news. Rutledge, 34, was acquired during the pre-season from Chicago and it is believed Rutledge even considered retiring before the 2040 season after being what sources say "disrespected" by being sent a fruit basket by Chicago after being traded to Boise. Although his production in Boise (.241/.316/.455 and 30 SB in 118 games) was a bounce-back from his career-worst 2039 campaign, it was clear that the speedster designated hitter was no longer the 40 HR/70 SB threat he was during his prime as a Jacksonville Hurricane. The relationship between Rutledge and Spuds got to a point where Rutledge refused to be demoted to Triple A, causing the team to try to find a trade partner. Instead, Rutledge left the team off the hook by retiring and some believe he has his eyes set on becoming a hitting coach in the near future.

Rutledge retires a veteran of 1939 BBA games in which he slashed .287/.356/.540, slugging 459 HR and stealing 627 bases (12th all-time). Rutledge was a four-time All-Star and a pivotal part of two Landis Memorial championships in Jacksonville (2031 and 2033).

As noted in the story, he was already disrespected once before...no need to sully his retirement. We're above that here in Boise.

Except you didn't mention the Potato of the Month Club, did you? So what will it be for his first month? Fries? Hash browns?

Rutledge, a borderline HOF candidate that will fall short I'd say in the end.

Solid career though highlighted by two landis titles. Those coming with a team that didn't have "A Great Wheel"

Definitely the Hall of Very Good for Rutledge.

I believe Jacksonville passed on "The Great Wheel™" for "A Great Team"...controversial but looking back it was the right move.
