Tater Talk: 2039.42 – Week in Review, 8/4-8/10

Image WEEK IN REVIEW (4-2): Now 8-5 over the last two weeks, Boise has played inspired ball after a disappointing start to the summer. Thanks to contributions from recently called-up outfielders Pedro Holguín (1.313 OPS) and Louis Oshin (.980 OPS), the Spuds offense looks primed to make a valiant wild card run over the final month-and-a-half of the season.

ORE-IDA® TATER-TOTS EMOJI SUMMARY OF THE WEEK: 🔥🥔🔥

HITTERS OF THE WEEK: Louis Oshin - 10-for-23, 6 RBI (.435 AVG, .980 OPS)

PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Pancho Germán - 1-0, 6⅓ IP, 8 K, 0 BB (1.42 ERA, 0.32 WHIP)

GAME OF THE WEEK: On August 10th, Boise defeated Frontier Division rival Seattle 8-3 to keep the Storm within sight for one of the Frick League wild card spots. Egbert Behner won his second game of the week to improve to 12-8 and continue to keep his ERA (4.73) for the year under the 5-run mark it was at for several months. Holguín went 4-for-5 with two doubles hitting in the #2 spot and at the bottom of the lineup, shortstop Norm Smith chipped in with with two stolen bases and a walk in addition to going 2-for-2 at the plate.

NEWS AND NOTES: In the midst of a breakout campaign, 2B Ramón Vela went down on August 7th with a strained rib cage muscle while trying to turn a seventh-inning double play against Des Moines...Vela would play two days later and again on the 10th, however trainers believe it could be a lingering injury for the next several weeks...despite needing Vela's services, Boise manager Barrett Callahan and the medical staff have decided to put Vela on the 7-day injury list as a precaution with hopes he'll be able to resume regular play once activated...a corresponding roster move has not yet been made...Dennis French is doing Dennis French things, slashing .359/.432/.641 (1.073 OPS) in the month of August...due to the effectiveness of Holguín and Oshin, and Ken Gerhart III's reluctance to accept a demotion to Triple A, general manager Joe Lederer will continue to juggle the three outfielders between Boise, Salt Lake City and waivers

DOWN ON THE FARM: Salt Lake City (AAA) took only one win in six contests last week to fall twenty games below .500...Alpines first baseman Dan Norman is off to a miserable start in August, going just 2-for-30...in his first taste of AAA, shortstop Motonobu Yamashita slashed .320/.370/.480 in 28 plate appearances to go along with several highlight reel plays in the field...Buffalo (AA) started the month of August hot, going 5-2 and sitting at 56-55 for the year...Félix Román continues to torch pitchers at any level and is now slashing .307/.398/.626 in 56 games since his promotion to Double A...Tulsa (A) went 3-3 for the week, including a seven-hour, twelve-minute 19-inning marathon on August 5th against Ocala...the Drillers won the record-setting affair, 6-5, thanks to a one-out, walk-off double by recently promoted catcher Keith Watkins...Watkins went 4-for-9 with a home run and the game-winning double, in addition to catching all 19 innings...the test of endurance, for players and fans alike, featured twelve pitchers, 595 pitches, thirteen offensive substitutions and ultimately wrapped up at 2:17 AM CST...Hot Springs (Short Season) went winless during the week and fell to .500 (22-22) for the year...Tijuana (Rookie) went 2-4 for the week and fell to third place in the division with a 21-21 record

So, I’m sure you’ll go back and read the full game log on that 19 inning marathon - or maybe call the family together, invite the neighbors in and do a dramatic reading of the play-by-play as you explain that not only is this fake baseball it’s minor league fake baseball. Then, just sit back and wait for the men with the state hospital commitment papers to arrive ...

Oh, in the next 48 hours, I'll do you one better. But for now, I'm glad you saw that piece of news, as I thought it was pretty incredible, even if it was "minor league fake baseball".

I’m being facetious here, of course. Finding stuff like a 19 inning marathon - especially in an obscure corner of your minor league system - is one of the coolest parts of the game. Particularly love that the catcher caught all 19 innings of it. His digital knees must have been killing him the next morning ...

Just think how much longer it would have been if they hadn't been using the DH. Praise heaven.
