Tater Talk: 2039.39 – Week in Review, 7/14-7/20

Image WEEK IN REVIEW (3-4): Despite losing four games and dropping a game in the standings, the Spuds played decently. If not for two seperate blown leads in the ninth inning, Boise was a few outs from turning in an impressive 5-2 record against formidable Wichita, San Fernando and Calgary. Through 98 games, Boise sits in third place in the Frontier Division and 3½ games back in the Frick League Wild Card standings.

ORE-IDA® TATER-TOTS EMOJI SUMMARY OF THE WEEK: 🆕🆑❓ 🤷‍♂️

HITTER OF THE WEEK: Ramón Vela - 7-for-19, 5 RBI (.368 AVG, 1.033 OPS)

PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Tomás Chávez - 1 W, 1 Hold, 2⅔ IP, 0 H, 0 R (0.00 ERA, 0.37 WHIP)

GAME OF THE WEEK: Thanks to late-inning dramatics, Boise knocked off Pacific Division-leading San Fernando 4-3 on July 18th. Starting pitcher Maxence Mace, amidst trade rumors, allowing just two runs in seven innings, leaving the game with a 3-2 lead. Unfortunately, Bill Pidduck coughed up the lead in the 8th inning, allowing Luis Maldonado to score from second on a two-out single by Pedro Garza. With one out in the bottom of the 9th, manager Barrett Callahan called back Norm Smith from the on-deck circle and sent in veteran Alfredo Salazar to pinch hit. With the count 0-2, "Savage" deposited a slider over the right field wall for a walk-off homer.

NEWS AND NOTES: Boise made its biggest trade under first-year general manager Joe Lederer, acquiring popular but struggling closer Timofei Bakitski for two prospects...Bakitski allowed only two hits in his first three appearances for the Spuds, unfortunately both were solo home runs...since June 20th, Chávez has thrown 24⅓ innings in 11 appearances, going 4-0 with a 1.85 ERA and 0.86 WHIP...starting all seven games since being recalled, Pedro Holguín slashed .280/.455/.400...Ken Gerhart III has cleared waivers after being designated for assignment to make room for Holguín...sources claim Holguín expressed his displeasure from being removed from the active roster and may be considering refusing to be demoted to Triple-A Salt Lake City...if that is the case, Boise will either have to find a trade partner for Holguín, return him back to the active roster or release the veteran outfielder

DOWN ON THE FARM: Thanks to a make-up double-header on July 16th in San Jose, Salt Lake City (AAA) played eight games during the week, going 5-3...center fielder Joel Reese was the Alpines' hottest bat, hitting .308 with 10 RBI and 9 runs...Buffalo (AA) went a disappointing 1-6 to drop under .500 (46-48)...Tulsa (A) went 3-4 during a week-long road trip and remain in 4th place in the division...Hot Springs (Short Season) was 3-2 for the week, including two shut-out victories over Port au Prince...despite going 3-3 and putting up a 15-14 record on the year, Tijuana (Rookie) finds itself in 4th place in the extremely competitive Mexican-American Division

You've gotta take your encouragement where you can find it … blown saves isn't an obvious choice, but whatever gets you through the night ...
