2035.5 Spring Training has arrived

Post by bschr682 » Sun Jun 10, 2018 11:39 am

The very first spring training for the expansion Spuds has arrived. Fans are abuzz. Who will they get to see play? More importantly who will ultimately make the first 27 man roster? Lets take a look.

Well due to the squirrely nature of expansion picks being made rule 5 eligible instantly regardless of years of service, the who will be in camp the first year question is exceedingly easy. The answer is everyone. All the players involved in the expansion draft had to be added to the 40 man along with the waiver wire acquisitions and the players arriving via trade. As all the players on the 40 man get the call to spring training, the entirety of the Boise talent pool at this early juncture will be in camp.

Ultimately though the real question ends up being who actually makes that first 27 man roster. That answer is a little more fluid at this point. For now it makes more sense to look at who will NOT make that first roster barring injury of course. It is no secret that top prospect Claudio Perez has a bit of development left to do so with the team already having 2 other solid catchers on the squad its pretty easy to see that Perez will be sent down. What about Godzilla? Management has been clearly drooling over him since being traded for. Well the rule 5 draft not only brought in the piece that turned into Godzilla, it also brought in the piece that keeps him in the minors for a year.

Enter Leonardo Martinez. As much as the Boise fans are abuzz about Godzilla, they aren't sleeping on Martinez either. Martinez is most definitely a DH but he has a very capable bat. A ton of power and a bit of patience will do wonders in the home confines of Boise. As Martinez is a rule 5 pickup, he must stay on the big league roster all season or be sent back to Louisville. Those factors combined with fellow top slugger Juan Parra being on the team (and only being able to play 1B/DH) lead to the easy decision to have Terada spend time in the minors. Terada does have a bit of developing to do yet anyway so maybe its for the best.

At this point those are the only definitive conclusions that can be made about the first Boise roster. Age, injury and the waiver wire will change everything else.

Be careful or Kyle will be betting you a player that Martinez doesn't do 2 WAR.
