The Morning Glory 2061.04: A Claim, A Trade

Post by bcslouck » Fri Dec 13, 2024 9:32 am

The Oysters had some notable transactions this passed week.

RP Josh Dougherty was claimed off waivers from division rival Phoenix. Dougherty had developed into a strong reliever in the back of the Talons bullpen but has struggled mightily this year. A 6.10 ERA is a sure fire way to end up on waivers. But his 4.05 FIP suggests he's pitched better than advertised. A .370 BABIP adds fuel to the fire suggesting he's been incredibly unlucky. Defensively, the Oysters are much stronger than the Talons. Rocky Mountain's .703 efficiency is 3rd in the JL while Phoenix sits 11th with a .680. The Oysters are 1st in Zone Rating with a +33.3 number. Phoenix is 11th with a -22.1 number. And even something as simple as errors points to the Oysters. They have 52, 2nd in the JL. The Talons have 76, 15th in the league. The hope is a better defense will make him a lot better. As of 8/8, the team is only on the hook for $2.08M with him hitting free agency after the season. It's a low risk move that could really strengthen a bullpen already starting to pick up some steam.

Another move the team made was a a trade with Montreal. Sending last years Diamond Glove winner at 2B may not seem like a smart move, but he wasn't a great fit in the clubhouse. Rumors were he ruffled a lot of feather and players were happy to see him gone. Retaining 50% and sending $250,000 to Montreal netted them two prospects that could be interesting down the line. Francisco Rios is probably a 4th OF in the future but has plenty of time to develop. Jake Beers is an interesting SP prospect as well. If he ever can figure out his control, he could be a decent back of the rotation arm. For the time being, Opening Day 2B Sergio Castro will step back into the roll.

With the Oysters starting to play well, you may see them make another move or two. The could be looking for a COF, a 2B, and possibly another RP. Another SP could also be in the mix. We hear they are mainly looking for rentals. They don't have a strong enough farm to pull of a blockbuster but have had decent success finding value at the deadline under GM Brandon Slouck.

Dougherty is a nice pickup. Was too expensive for me but the change of scenery should be good for him.

Unfortunately, he seems to have gotten the unlucky over thirty zero instead of one in the regression calculations.
