The Morning Glory 2058.01: New Beginnings

Post by bcslouck » Mon Jan 22, 2024 10:18 am

Just over a year removed from winning the Landis Memorial, the Oysters find themselves under new management after Brett Golden stepped down. Picked from Cairo after his own hiatus after stepping down, GM Brandon Slouck was hired to hopefully get the team back on track competing in the Johnson League.

"Brett was gracious enough to walk me through the organizations though process going into this offseason," Slouck said at his first presser as GM.

"I don't plan on making sweeping changes. This is an organization in decent shape. We have some financial constraints but that should only be for another year. We have some prospects close to ready. And honestly, the ML team is solid. We have something here. Just need to supplement however we can within reason."

When digging into the financials, you see the issues. The team lost over $26M last year. Despite a $140M budget, they can only afford roughly a $90M payroll. Without some salary shifting, the team only has about $8M this offseason despite shedding a decent amount of money.

"Some of our moves won't be popular. But we have to get creative this year if we want to compete. We can't assume the young guys are ready to fill in some of the big shoes we're filling. The will have a shot at Spring Training to prove they're ready, but we have to give them competition. We really will be looking to upgrade the defense without sacrificing too much offense. And we definitely need to get the pitching improved. Defense could help that but I think we will have to bring in a couple arms to compete."

"We had a shot at a Wildcard spot down to the end. I think we'll be able to get one of those spots in 2058."

Despite not planning on making sweeping changes, multiple firings and hiring's have already been made within the organization that line up with Slouck's philosophy. We'll see if he keeps his word about the roster.

Little hamstrung financially this year so we'll see. Hope so.
