The news out of the Rocky Mountain Oysters Front Office today is that venerated SS Henri 'Papillion' Charriere has been benched for the at least the next couple of weeks.

Charriere has been struggling this season, currently finding himself with a slash line of .197/.281/.273. His career averages are .236/.327/.348.

Asked about the move, particularly how a $14M a year player can be benched, GM Golden responded with "He should have been benched weeks ago. I mean, nobody really pays attention to averages these days but 40 points below his career OBP numbers? We cant have that on this team. The only thing, and I mean only thing, that has kept him in the lineup is his glove. The guy plays a gold glove-caliber SS and there arent too many guys in this league that can play at that level."

Hints from Oysters Manager Lorenzo Herrera is that newly acquired infielder Pepe Espinosa will play SS while infielder Felipe Reyna will man 2B.

"Yes, we're probably giving up a little bit of defense - I mean, Pepe is getting old - but with Reyna at 2B and Scott Torres at 3B...I'll take that increase of offense to more than make up for a slight lack of defense at SS," said GM Golden.

Pepe’s a bad shortstop but not horrible and if his OPS stays above .800 or so he’s acceptable.

Charriere's is a OPS is .554. I'll gladly give up a little defense for Pepe's current .918!
