On Saturday, July 22nd, the Rocky Mountain Oyster Front Office was a flurry of activity. Two players were put on the IL: P Cristo Muñóz was put on the 7-day with a "dead arm" and 2B Edgardo Encarnación was put on the 60-day with a torn labrum. Muñóz has been having a decent season, appearing in 29 games with 9 starts. He has gone 6-2 with a 3.66 ERA, a 1.19 WHIP, and 50 strikeouts to only 19 walks. Encarnación has been what the Oysters had hoped when they signed him this offseason, going .268/.316/.394, a 1.2 WAR all while playing decent defense.
To replace the injured players on the major league roster are P Ralph Sanders and 1B/3B Abu Wamukota. It was anticipated that Wamukota would man the hot corner while IF Scott Torres slid over to play 2B. That plan only lasted long enough for GM Brett Golden to acquire a couple of other players and allow those players to meet the team in Colorado just ahead of the team's travel to Calgary.
Acquired first was IF Pepe Espinosa from the San Fernando Bears. Espinosa is batting .303/.347/.571 and is at ease at every infield position. Also obtained, this time from the Chicago Black Sox, was IF Felipe Reyna. Reyna is also having a decent season, batting .269/.338/.407.
After his staff informed him those acquisitions would put the team over the salary cap, GM Golden set to work to find another trading partner. He double-dipped and found a partner once again in Chicago. This time it was P Byron Ratcliffe on the move. However, this time the return was in the form of minor league depth, getting AA 2B Imad Emir in return. (Emir was assigned to the AA Columbus Patriot Pandas but he will immediately be put on the IL as he rehabs a strained quad.)
