Poblanotes 52.5- How Can We Miss You If You Won't Go Away?

“So… What do you want me to do, Rob? Sign your cast?”

I probably should not have been so snippy with Rob Chenoweth- he’s really a good guy- but I was getting tired of seeing him across my desk talking about going on the 60-day DL. I mean, I’m paying the guy 14 million bucks a year, and he’s missed almost exactly half of the last two years with injuries. And he hasn't played all that well when he's been healthy.

He looked miserably at me, making me feel even guiltier about snapping at him. “I’m just so sorry, Chico. I mean, I’ve never had any real injuries before last season, and now… I just feel like I’m letting the whole team down”.

“Oh, don’t worry about that, Rob. I mean we weren’t going anywhere this season anyway. The important thing is that you get well and are ready to go full speed next spring. Just go home and take care of that broken wing, okay?”

“Thanks, Chico… And I want you to know, even though I have an opt-out in my contract after this year, I won’t forget how loyal you and the Chilis organization has been to me.”

Oh shit, I thought… does he actually think this is the news I want to hear? His much cheaper replacement is hitting .462. I could so easily spend his salary on some actual pitching help this winter. How badly can he misread the situation? Is it the head injury from last year that makes him think this way?

“Well, Rob”, I gulped. “Of course we love having you, but in the last analysis we understand that you have to do what you think is best for you and your family.”

Could I put it any plainer than that? You’re a great guy, Rob, but it’s time for you to go, and don’t let the door hit you where the good Lord split you…

And the ultimate irony would be if he does opt out after this awesome writeup!

Truth be told, I’d be okay with him sticking around. If I have that extra 14 million to spend, I’ll just blow it on something stupid, like pitching…
