Poblanotes 2047.3- 5 to Watch

Post by chicoruiz » Sat May 29, 2021 2:51 pm

Wins and losses are a secondary goal for me this season. Oh, of course I’d prefer not to lose 110 or something, but primarily I just want to identify what players could conceivably be a part of the next good Chilis team. With that in mind, I wanted to write a few words pinpointing five guys I’ll be keeping a special eye on as the season begins:

SP Sergio Rojas- Sergio is listed as a reliever, and he’s had his best seasons in the majors in the bullpen. So of course I’m making him a starter. I mean, he has the stamina, and he has three plus pitches. It may not work but there’s no reason why it shouldn’t work…

P Sumitomo Takahashi- Sumi has great stuff, good control, high work ethic… he has everything a successful pitcher has except success. He basically jumped straight from AA to the majors with only a cup of coffee in AAA, and it didn’t serve him well. Right now he’s listed in the big league bullpen, but if I get the pitcher on waivers that I claimed, Sumi might profit from a summer in Albuquerque, spent getting his s*** together.

C Howard Burton- My first trade acquisition in EL Paso. I have a hunka hunka burnin’ love for a left-handed hitting catcher, and Howard hits righties well enough to be at least part of a platoon, which is how I’ll start the season. His platoon mate, Jason Bowen, is making 11.4 million this year, so there will be pressure from ownership to play him, but they’ll both get a fair shot.

IF Teruo Jouda- He’d probably be best cast as a utility man, but after considering a number of different infield lineups, I’m starting him at 2b. This is his big break (he’s never played more than 46 games in a season at any position), and if he face-plants it may necessitate wholesale IF changes.

DH Jose Calderon- He’s only 27, and he’s got 30 HR potential, but he’s blocked at 1B, and I have a LF who plays defense like a man who’s yearning to be a DH. Somebody in the 1B-LF-DH nexus may eventually be dangled in a trade offer for prospects, but a 1B-DH guy usually has to be REALLY hot to gather any trade interest.

These guys could play their way into my long term plans, or be gone by July 4, but really you could say that about 20+ guys on the Chilis. The good thing is that after this season I’ll have a ton of payflex. If I just decline all my team options, I would be looking at having about 56 million bucks to blow on free agents next offseason. So I really could take this thing down to bare studs if I choose to…

Jouda is one of those guys who is just kind of fun to see what's going to happen with.

Yeah.., I wonder if the OOTP software is sophisticated enough to reflect that players perform better when they get regular playing time at one position. Kind of doubt it...

I doubt he hits enough to keep getting regular playing time

Jouda's track record in Portland suggests no, the glove does not outweigh his poor ability to hit.
