2046 Post 1 - CHANGES

THE EL PASO TIMES
CHANGES AT THE TOP, ON THE FIELD AND BELOW by David Gutierrez

Not long after the announcement that Nigel Laverick was stepping down as the general manager of the Chili's, the team announced Rich Young will come over from the Riyadh Red Crescents to take over in El Paso. It's a move that surprised many and fans of the team voiced their displeasure online and on radio talk shows. It will be his third team in just over a year and while he did win the championship in the UMEBA last year, many still see him as unproven. When asked how he got out of a contract that he just signed Young said “ It wasn't publicized but I had an out clause in my contract that I could leave at any time for a BBA opportunity. That's always been my goal, to get back stateside. I love the UMEBA but this is where I want to settle.” Neither Abdul (Riyadh owner Abdul-Alim Mufeed) or I thought it would happen this quickly. In fact I expected to be in Riyadh for several seasons to come but opportunities come when they do so, here I am.”

The team has also announced a trade swapping fist baseman with San Fernando. Tommy Cochran will go the the Bears and Jose Calderon comes to El Paso. Calderon is a bit younger and a bit cheaper and should slide into the first base slot after this season as Tony Hernandez will likely leave as his contract expires and he prefers to test free agency. The Chili's also get 21 year old first baseman Jesus Alvarez as they look to add depth and quality to their minor league system.

In that same vein of adding quality and depth to the minor league system, the 2046 draft is now complete so let's take a look at what the team did. There's considerable excitement around first round pick Hector Cano Jr. Cano Jr. has the potential to have excellent bat to ball and power skills to go along with very good defense in center field, a rare combo. His ceiling is that of a multi-year all star. Second round choice Glen Simmons projects to be a solid back of the rotation option on the strength of his plus change up. Third rounder Gary Owens could also be a 5th starter type or reliever depending on his development but at only 17 he will require time to reach that ceiling. In the fourth round the team took a flyer on raw athlete Bob Taylor. Taylor was an outfielder in high school but has the potential to play across the infield too. He has the ability and all the intangibles to succeed but he will require a lot of development and the organization will be patient with him.

The Chili's currently sit at the bottom of the Frontier division and it seems like it will take some time for them to build the critical mass of talent in their farm system to achieve and sustain success at the major league level. Fans of this franchise have already been asked to be patient and even more will be asked of them but an attempt at a quick rebuild would seem to be folly.
