The 2046 Opening Week

Rookie Phil Cole took the ball at Phoenix on Opening Day for his first ever BBA start. Maybe it was nervousness, but the Talons spanked him for three hits, a walk and two runs in his first ever competitive BBA innings. He still only threw 18 pitches in the innings despite that, he was helped out by Fernando Figueroa & Clive Timberlakecombining the throw a runner out at home plate. Cole manned up though and only allowed three hits and a walk the next six innings as Chilis clawed it back and won 3-2 giving him his first BBA win.

 Ramon Guerrero pitched 6.1 innings as Chilis blanked Talons in their first shutout of the new season.

 El Paso won the opening series 2-1 after they blanked Talons 8-0 in the rubber game.

 Opening Day in El Paso drew 54,506, 195 less than last year and Boise took a one-run as two Spuds runs in the fifth turned a 4-3 deficit into a win.

 Trailing Boise by two games to nil El Paso at least earned a win against them when Luis Maldonado tied the final game of the series at 5-5 in the bottom of the ninth and then a Clive Timberlake double drove home Lopez for the walk-off win.

 We’ve sold 26,574 season tickets at $12, 17% up on 2045. Tickets at $18 now are currently 99 cents cheaper than the highest ever price in franchise history. Last year’s total attendance of 3,153,000 was 15,000 below the franchise record.

Tony Alomar on his return to the franchise gained his 35th win for us in the 6-5 win over Boise.

 Ramon Guerrero is a fifth of the way to last year’s win tally in just the first week.

Jason Bowen after hitting .453 in spring opened the first week of the season hitting . . . .053

 Five different players have hit a homer for El Paso and Luis Maldonado leads the team with five RBI

 Clean-up hitter Tommy Cochran leads the team with six runs scored.

Minor League Notes

Albuquerque (5-1) got off to a decent start. Josh Hayworth who nearly made the Chilis went 2-0, 0.67 ERA in his first two starts as the Coyotes ace. In four of the six games Coyotes have allowed just one run or less. Don Keagle, drafted in the second-round last year, hit .440/.481/.600 in his first ever week in Triple-A. Fernando Casimiro in his second year at Triple-A hit two homers and collected eight RBI while hitting .409 in the first week.

Columbus (2-4) continued last year’s poor form. Their best batter in a bad bunch was right fielder John Snow who hit .385/.448/.538. Third baseman Norberto Acuna worked seven walks in his first week, two more than utility backup Francisco Fuentes.

Topeka (3-3) took three heavy beatings including a 2-15 loss to Pahrump while collecting three two-run wins. Nelson Sandoval lasted 1.2 innings in his one start giving up three homers and eight runs. The Thunderbears only hit three homers in the opening week, two of them by Tony Casillas

Looks like things might be looking up in El Paso, especially since you don't have a hand tied behind your back as much in terms of finances.
